Lustre File System

The Lustre file system is a high-performance clustered file system that allows parallel data access across multiple cluster nodes. Commvault software is designed to optimize Lustre data scans by integrating with changelogs retrieved from the MDT Lustre file system component, and to perform efficient distributed backups.

The Lustre file system changelogs feature records the events that change the file namespace or file metadata. Changes such as file creation, deletion, renaming, attribute changes, etc., are recorded with the target and parent Lustre file identifiers (FIDs), the name of the target, and a timestamp.

The Lustre file system uses the following methods for scan operations:

  • A recursive scan operation uses a traditional scan using the POSIX system calls.

  • An incremental scan operation uses the changelogs retrieved from the MDT.

You install the Commvault software on one or more nodes in the Lustre cluster. These nodes are referred to as data access nodes. The distributed backup and restore operations run on the data access nodes.

Key Features

Simplified Data Management

Management of all the Lustre data in your environment using the same console and infrastructure.

Scan Integration with Meta Data Target (MDT) and Changelog Server

Optimized scan integration with changelogs retrieved from the MDT.

Distributed Backup and Restores

Distributed backup and restores, which run in parallel on multiple data access nodes, for optimal sharing of the backup load.

Fault-Tolerant Model

Fault-tolerant model that redistributes task loads when a data access node fails.

LAN-Free Backup and Restores

Faster LAN-free backup and restores using a grid storage policy.

Reports

A variety of reports are automatically provided for managing the Lustre data. You can access Reports from the Web Console, the Cloud Services site, or the CommCell Console.

Terminology

The Lustre file system documentation uses the following terminology:

Pseudo-client

The logical entity that represents one or more Lustre clusters.

Instance

The entity that represents one Lustre cluster.

Subclient

The logical entity that defines the data to be backed up.
