Migrate from Exchange On-Premises Servers to Office 365 with Exchange

Important:

On October 31, 2017, Microsoft ended support for RPC over HTTP for Office 365. For more information, see the Microsoft support article: "RPC over HTTP reaches end of support in Office 365 on October 31, 2017", https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3201590/rpc-over-http-reaches-end-of-support-in-office-365-on-october-31-2017.

After December 15, 2018, Commvault will not support backup nor archiving operations using Office 365 (Exchange Online) for the Exchange Mailbox (Classic) Agent nor OnePass for Exchange Mailbox (Classic).

Transition to the Exchange Mailbox Agent. The Exchange Mailbox Agent uses EWS for backup and archiving instead of MAPI.

For information, see Transitioning to the Exchange Mailbox Agent.

It is important that you plan your migration process from Exchange on-premises servers to Office 365 with Exchange before you migrate your end users' mailboxes to the cloud. You can use Commvault data protection features to help you plan an efficient migration process. For example, if your user mailboxes contain large amounts of messages, you might want to improve throughput during the migration process by reducing the size of the mailboxes first, and then migrating the reduced mailboxes. In this case, you can use Commvault software as part of your overall migration process. In addition, you can make the migration process transparent to your end users by providing them access to their older messages with Commvault end-user recovery features.

Note

If you migrate from an on-premises server to Office 365 with Exchange, you can recall the same stubs that were backed up using the on-premises server.

Before You Begin

You must have a thorough understanding of migrating on-premises Exchange servers to Office 365 with Exchange. Consult the Microsoft documentation before your migration process. For example, see the following articles:

Migration Plan

  1. Use the on-premises agent to run a data protection job on the on-premises mailboxes that you want to migrate.

  2. To reduce the size of the user mailboxes on the Exchange server, prune messages that are older than 30, 60, or 365 days, depending on your organization's policies.

  3. If you use OnePass for Exchange Mailbox (Classic), provide your end users with access to their older messages using the following features:

  4. Migrate the user mailboxes to the Office 365 cloud.
