System Requirements for Virtual Server Agent with Nutanix AHV

The following requirements are for the Virtual Server Agent with Nutanix AHV.

Nutanix AHV Requirements

  • The Commvault software is supported with Nutanix AHV versions 4.6, 4.7, 5.0, 5.1.x.x, 5.5.x.x, 5.6.x, 5.8.x, 5.9.x, 5.10.x, 5.11, 5.15, 5.16, 5.17.x, 5.18.x, 5.20.x, 6.0, 6.5, 6.7, 6.8, and 6.10.

  • To support other hypervisors that run on a Nutanix cluster, you must configure a virtualization client for that hypervisor. The supported hypervisors are:

    • Microsoft Hyper-V

    • VMware

  • For Nutanix controller VMs (CVMs), configure a cluster virtual IP.

  • If you are using V3 API, to run backups, your user account must have admin permissions (super user) with all roles defined, or you must configure AD services, and then map the AD user account to the Cluster Admin role and Self Service Portal admin roles via their Self Service Portal. For more information, contact Nutanix Support & Services.

  • For application-consistent backups of user virtual machines, verify that the following requirements are met:

    • Install Nutanix Guest Tools software on each virtual machine (VM).

    • Verify that the CVM Virtual IP (port 2074) is accessible from user VMs.

    • Update the cluster to Nutanix AHV version 4.6 or later.

    • If virtual machines are added in a user-created protection domain, then the Nutanix Administrator must enable the Use Application Consistent Snapshots option in the Nutanix console while adding these virtual machines. However, if the virtual machines are not added in a user-created protection domain, then the Commvault software automatically creates a protection domain and enables the application consistent backup feature during the backup operation.

      Note

You cannot create application-consistent snapshots of virtual machines that contain delta, SATA, or IDE disks.

Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) with Microsoft Azure

Commvault supports data protection and management for Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on Azure. For more information, see Commvault Data Protection for Nutanix Cloud Clusters on Azure.

Quiescing for Application-Consistent Backups

Windows VMs take application-consistent snapshots using the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) framework.

Linux VMs use pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts instead of VSS. The scripts are located in /sbin/pre_freeze and /sbin/post_thaw folders. The user account that runs the scripts must have root:root access with 700 permissions.

Important

To perform application-consistent backups, each virtual machine must be in a separate consistency group. If a subclient includes a consistency group with multiple VMs, the backup for those VMs fails.

Virtual Server Agent (Proxy) Requirements

You can install the Virtual Server Agent (VSA) on any virtual machine (either inside or outside the cluster environment) or on any physical machine. The VSA proxy that is in the cluster will use the HotAdd data transfer mode and backups will be faster. The VSA proxy that is not in the cluster will use the NAS data transfer mode. You can deploy additional VSA proxies as needed for load balancing. For more information, see Transport Modes.

Install the Virtual Server Agent on virtual machines that meet the following requirements:

  • A Minimum of 100 GB of disk space.

  • A Minimum of 4 GB RAM, beyond the requirements of the operating system and running applications.

The Virtual Server Agent can be deployed on VMs running either of the following operating systems:

  • Windows Proxies

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2022 (including Core Edition)

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (including Core Edition)

    • Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (including Core Edition)

For Windows proxies, use the Windows diskpart command to disable automount and set the SAN policy to OfflineAll. If these features are enabled, they interfere with disk HotAdd operations that are performed as part of backup and restore jobs.

  • Linux Proxies

    • RHEL 8.x, or 9.x

    • Oracle Linux 8.x or 9.x

    • Rocky Linux 8.x or 9.x

For Linux proxies, disable lvmetad to avoid issues with HotAdd operations during backup and recovery.

    Note

For a machine that runs RHEL 8.x or 9.x, to install operating system packages that are required to enable automatic installation of Mono, register the machine with Red Hat.

Port Requirements

  • For application-consistent backups of user VMs, verify that user VMs can access Nutanix controller VMs using the CVM Virtual IP (port 2074).

  • Verify that the CommServe computer, the MediaAgents, and the Virtual Server Agent can communicate with Nutanix AHV using Prism port 9440.

Guest Operating Systems

The virtual machines that you want to back up can have any of the guest operating systems that are supported by the Nutanix AHV platform.
