When restoring virtual machine files, you can convert the Hyper-V disks in the VHDX format to VMDK or VHD formats. Use disk conversion to move data from one platform to another, or as the first step in migrating a virtual machine from one platform to another.
Considerations
-
Disk conversion is supported for Windows and Linux VMs and disks with thin or thick disk provisioning.
-
When restoring disk files using browse and restore operations, you can start disk conversion from a full, synthetic full, or incremental backup job.
If restoring disk files from backup job history, you can initiate disk conversion from a full or synthetic full backup jobs.
-
Disk conversion is not supported from differential backups, or for virtual machines with multiple snapshots.
-
After converting a disk, you can attach it to an existing VM or use it to create a new VM. Virtual machines created from converted disks can be backed up and restored using the same processes as virtual machines that are created directly in VMware or Hyper-V.
-
For Generation 2 VMs, after converting VHDX disks to VMDKs and creating a VMware virtual machine using the converted disk, change the boot firmware option from BIOS to EFI to boot the virtual machine successfully.
