Snapshots

Starting with Commvault Long-Term Support Release 11.40, NAS backups that use NetApp SnapDiff no longer fall back to recursive scans when SnapDiff initialization fails. Instead, the backup fails and displays an error message that identifies any configuration issues that must be corrected.

As a result, after upgrading to LTS Release 11.40, some SnapDiff-enabled backups that previously completed by falling back to a recursive scan might fail until configuration issues are corrected. Common causes include missing RPC configuration, missing NFS network configuration, or invalid storage array associations.

1-Touch for Linux computers

Starting with Commvault Long-Term Support Release 11.40.50, the 1-Touch Backup process on Linux clients uses the following default directory for job results:/iDataAgent/jobResults/.

This replaces the previously used /tmp directory.

Restore By Job

Starting with Commvault Long-Term Support Release 11.40, the Restore By Job option at the backup set level is no longer available in the CommCell Console. However, job-based restore operations remain available at all other levels.

Installs

Commvault Version 11 clients running Feature Release 11.24 or earlier are not compatible with CommServe servers running Long-Term Support Release 11.40 or later. To prevent compatibility and communication issues, upgrade all clients running 11.24 or earlier to a supported feature release before upgrading the CommServe server to 11.40 or later.

To identify and upgrade 11.24 and earlier clients on the CommServe server, do the following:

1. Create a new Smart Server Group.

2. Configure the Smart Rule with: Client version v11 and feature release less than or equal to 24.

3. Run a client upgrade job on the Smart Server Group to upgrade all clients running 11.24 or earlier to the current feature release of the CommServe server.

4. After all clients are upgraded, upgrade the CommServe server to 11.40 or later.

Installs

You can no longer install the Commvault control plane on Windows, which includes only the CommServe server, the Web Server, and the Command Center components.

Commvault strongly encourages you to transition to a Linux environment for Control plane components. The Linux platform offers significantly better performance, enhanced stability, and superior resource efficiency when running Commvault.

Metrics Reporting

When you update the Metrics Server to Commvault Software version 11.40.67 or later, you must also update the CommServe to Commvault Software version 11.46.67 or later to support the Metrics upload security enhancements.

If you upgrade the Metrics Server before the CommServe, temporarily disable Metrics upload token validation by using the MetricsUploadTokenValidation setting. After all CommServe computers are upgraded to Commvault Software version 11.40.67 or later, re-enable token validation.

Security enhancement

By default, newly installed clients block any executables or binaries that run from outside the installation folder. The recommended approach is to provide the credentials for the target machines so the client can run under those credentials. If that’s not possible, you can manually adjust the security settings on each target machine to fine-tune the access level. Note that these settings cannot be pushed from Command Center and must be created directly on the target machines. The system includes a 3-month grace period for initial setup, configuration, and testing for clients upgraded to Feature Release 11.40 and later. Enhanced security is automatically enabled after this period unless an executable or binary is run outside the Commvault installation directory, in which case the grace period is extended by an additional three months from the most recent execution.

To whitelist certain folders to execute the binaries, configure the sAdminWhiteListPaths additional setting on the target computer.

To whitelist certain executables for CVD to execute, configure the sAdminWhiteListBinaries additional setting on the target computer.

To disable this security feature, configure the nLimitedAdminAccess additional setting for admin computers.

MediaAgent

The Data Directory specified during MediaAgent installation now includes the DDB directory, in addition to the job results and Index Cache directories.

If you specify a custom data directory, the software appends <OEM>data to the path and creates the following directories:

• <custom-path>/<OEM>data/DDB

• <custom-path>/<OEM>data/jobResults

• <custom-path>/<OEM>data/IndexCache

For example, if you specify /test as the Data Directory, the software creates /test/<OEM>data/DDB, /test/<OEM>data/jobResults, and /test/<OEM>data/IndexCache.

Updated the DDB Query and Insert (QI) health thresholds in the CommCell Console to align with the health status reported in Command Center.

• Good: Query Index response time is less than 600 ms, or 600 ms or greater when the DDB contains fewer than 160 million primary records.

• Warning: Query Index response time is 600–800 ms and the DDB contains 160 million or more primary records.

• Critical: Query Index response time is 800 ms or greater and the DDB contains an average of 160 million or more primary records per partition.

Disk, Cloud and Air Gap Protect Storages

This release introduces the following storage configuration and management improvements:

• Disk storage configuration:

  • Deduplication DB Location is renamed to DDB MediaAgent.

  • DDB MediaAgent now supports selecting multiple MediaAgents.

  • The DDB path is automatically derived from the selected MediaAgents, so you don't need to specify the path manually.

• Cloud storage and Air Gap Protect storage:

  • MediaAgent and DDB MediaAgent now support selecting multiple MediaAgents.

  • When a storage resource pool is defined for the selected region, the software automatically assigns MediaAgents from that pool. Automatic is selected by default.

  • You can override the automatic selection and manually select the MediaAgents.

• DDB location management:

  • The Deduplication DB Location section displays the DDB disks configured for each MediaAgent. By default, one DDB disk created during installation is displayed.

  • You can create DDB disks by specifying a valid disk path and reassign partitions between existing disks.

  • You can't delete a DDB location while it contains partitions.

  • After all partitions are removed from a DDB location, the software automatically cleans up the location, unless it's the only DDB location remaining for the MediaAgent.

• Storage resource pools:

  • You can use a Storage Resource Pool to logically group MediaAgents by region and simplify region-based storage provisioning.

Deduplication

Version 4 deduplication databases (DDBs) are not supported in the current software release. Before upgrading to the current version, you must convert all Version 4 DDBs to Version 5. Version 5 DDBs support enhanced data management capabilities, including garbage collection and journal pruning. Use the Convert DDB to V5 workflow to complete the conversion.

Starting with Long-Term Support Release 11.40, the behavior of the Allow jobs to run to this copy while at least [ ] partition(s) are available option for storage policies with multiple partitioned DDBs has been updated.

Backup and auxiliary copy jobs now continue when at least half of the DDB partitions are available. If fewer than half of the partitions are available, jobs do not run.
