Review the existing storage pool, new node, and environment requirements before you add nodes to a HyperScale X storage pool.
Existing storage pool requirements
Verify that the existing environment meets the following software and platform requirements.
| Component | Required version | Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| CommServe server | Long-Term Support Release 11.40 (11.40.72) or later | View the CommServe server version. If the CommServe server is on an earlier version, update it to the latest maintenance release. |
| HyperScale X MediaAgents | Commvault Platform Release 2024E (11.36.18) or later | All MediaAgents in the storage pool must run the same software version. View the HyperScale X MediaAgent version. |
| HyperScale X platform | HyperScale X Platform Version 2.2608 or later | View the HyperScale X platform version. |
| HyperScale X platform installed with a VaultOS 8 ISO | HyperScale X Platform Version 3.2608 or later | All nodes in the storage pool must run the same platform version. |
| HyperScale X platform installed with a VaultOS 9 ISO | HyperScale X Platform Version 4.2608 or later | N/A |
If the CommServe server or one or more MediaAgents don't meet the software version requirements, update the software to the latest maintenance release. For instructions, see Update Commvault software on a server.
For HyperScale X clusters installed using HyperScale ISO 2.x images, upgrade the cluster to HyperScale VaultOS 8. For instructions, see Install operating system updates on HyperScale X.
If the existing environment meets the software and platform requirements, you don't need to download and install additional software or platform updates before adding nodes.
Verify access and network connectivity
-
Enable root access if it's disabled on the storage pool. For more information, see Enable or disable root access.
Note
Don't change the default root password on the node. You'll be prompted to create a new password during the add-node operation.
-
Verify that ICMP/PING requests to the default gateway are enabled. If they're disabled, update the network configuration to allow ICMP/PING requests to the default gateway.
New node requirements
Verify that the new nodes are compatible with the existing storage pool.
Hardware compatibility
| Requirement | Support |
|---|---|
| Drive count | New nodes must have the same drive count as the existing nodes. |
| Drive size | New nodes must have the same drive size as the existing nodes. |
| Larger drives | Supported if drives of the same size aren't available. The larger drives are formatted to match the existing drive size, resulting in some loss of native capacity. |
| Different certified hardware vendors | Supported when the same drive count and drive size are maintained. |
| Different server generations | Supported when the same drive count and drive size are maintained. |
| Appliance and Reference Architecture nodes in the same storage pool | Not supported. |
| Maximum storage pool size | 12 nodes. |
For storage pool sizing and expansion guidance, see Sizing Guidelines and Capacity Planning.
Node Expansion Requirements for HyperScale 2.x
You cannot expand a HyperScale 2.x storage pool by adding nodes running VaultOS 9.
To add VaultOS 9 nodes to an existing HyperScale 2.x storage pool, you must first upgrade all HyperScale 2.x nodes in the storage pool to VaultOS 8.
The following requirements apply:
- The CommServe server must run Commvault Platform Release 2023E or later.
- Before upgrading the nodes to VaultOS 8, the existing HyperScale 2.x storage pool must run platform version 2.2312 or later.
Note
Mixing Appliance nodes and Reference Architecture nodes in the same storage pool isn't supported.
Prepare the new nodes
Prepare the hardware, network, DNS, and management interfaces before you add the nodes.
| Configuration | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Hardware | Rack and secure the new HyperScale X Appliance nodes. |
| Network topology | Use the same network topology as the existing nodes. Review the existing network configuration before configuring the new nodes. |
| DNS | Configure the required DNS records for the new nodes. |
| Switches | Configure the switches for the network topology used in your environment. |
| IPMI | Power on the new nodes and configure the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) port. |
| HyperScale X image | Verify that each new node uses image version Hyperscale ISO 4.2608. If a node uses an earlier image, re-image it with the most recent version before adding it. |
| CommServe credentials | Obtain the credentials required to connect the new nodes to the existing CommServe server. |
| Default gateway connectivity | Verify that ICMP/PING requests to the default gateway are enabled. If they're disabled, update the network configuration to allow them. |
