Configuration of Disaster Recovery (DR) Backups

A Disaster Recovery (DR) backup is executed in the following phases:

  • Export

The software exports a metadata backup of the CommServe database to the default staging directory software_installation_directory\CommserveDR. You can specify a local or network path as the destination for exporting metadata.

You can also configure the following additional export destinations:

  • Commvault Cloud Services portal
  • Cloud storage library

Recommended

  • The staging directory must not be located on a mounted path or use a symbolic link. If necessary, contact your software provider to change the default staging directory.

  • Store DR backups in a dedicated network location that is accessible from both the production host and the recovery host.

  • Do not use a local disk or a local clustered disk as the export destination.

  • Use a UNC path to access the network location. Ensure that this location is dedicated and not used for other CommServe tasks.

  • Do not use administrative shares as an export location. For example, \\MyServer\E$\.

  • For a network location on a Windows mount path, ransomware protection is enabled by default. For a network location on a Linux mount path, you must enable ransomware protection manually.

  • Do not use the Commvault installation directory as a backup location for DR backups on local disk.

  • Enable a cloud copy for DR backups to avoid a critical status when using only a UNC or local path.

  • Backup

During the backup phase, the metadata in the staging directory on the CommServe, along with configured log files, is backed up using the DR storage policy.

  • A default DR storage policy (CommServeDR) is automatically created when the first library is configured in the CommCell environment. By default, the primary copy is created as a WORM copy to prevent accidental deletion of data that is not qualified for aging.

  • A secondary copy for DR backup data is automatically created when the first tape library is configured. An auxiliary copy schedule that runs every 15 minutes is also created by default. You can modify the frequency of this auxiliary copy operation if required.
