Migrating Data From the Celerra File Server to Other File Servers

You can back up the data on the Celerra file server and restore the data to another file server using the following steps:

  1. Create a new archive set to back up the data on the file server. For more information, see Creating an Archive Set for Dell EMC VNX / Celerra.

  2. Create a new subclient to back up the stubs on the file server. If you already archived the data using a subclient (for example, subclient 1), we still recommend that you create a new subclient (subclient 2) to back up the stubs created by the original subclient (subclient 1). Use the following procedure to create a new subclient (subclient2).

  3. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > File System.

  4. Right the archive_set, point to All Tasks, and then click New Subclient.

The New Subclient dialog box appears.

  5. Specify the basic settings for the subclient:

    1. In the Subclient Name box, type a name.

    2. On the Content tab, click Add Paths to add the CIFS path that belongs to the Dell EMC VNX / Celerra client.

    3. On the Archiving Rules tab, specify the archiving rules in such a way that none of the files qualify for archiving.

      Note

You must make sure that none of the files in the subclient content are backed up because if a file qualifies for backup, then the corresponding stubs might be recalled when the backup operation runs.

    4. On the Storage Device tab, select a storage policy from the Storage Policy list.

    5. Click OK.

  6. Right click the newly-created subclient (subclient 2), and then click Backup.

The Backup Options dialog box appears.

  7. Click OK.

  8. Right-click subclient 2, and then click Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

    Note

Make sure that the destination computer is added as a client to the CommCell Console

  9. Click View Content.

  10. Select the data that you want to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

  11. On the Restore Options - General tab, in the Specify destination path box, enter the UNC path of the destination file server.

  12. Clear the Restore Data Instead of Stub check box.

  13. Restore the data backed up by the original subclient (subclient 1) using the following steps:

    1. Right-click subclient 1, and then click Browse and Restore.

    2. The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

    3. Click View Content.

    4. Select the data that you want to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

    5. On the Restore Options - General tab, in the Specify destination path box, enter the UNC path of the destination file server.

    6. Select the Overwrite if file on media is newer option so that the data files backed up by subclient 1 are restored.

  14. If you are migrating stubs to the Unity file server, then create the new subclient on the Unity file server client on the CommCell Console, and then perform the backup and restore operations.

    Note

You cannot view the offline, sparse, or reparse attributes of the stubs. When you right-click the stubs to view the stub properties, a recall operation is triggered automatically on the stub.

  15. Unity file server does not not support the offline attribute feature. To run the stubbing operations without setting the offline attributes, create the additional setting on the file server.

    • On the Unity file server, add the GXHSMSTUB_NAS_SETOFFLINEATTRIB additional setting as shown in the following table.

For instructions about adding the additional setting from the CommCell Console, see Add or Modify an Additional Setting.
