Agent-Based Application Backups

Similar to application-aware backups, the agent-based application backup feature performs application discovery for the VMs selected in the VM group and configures protection by installing an in-guest application agent. With agent-based application backups, you can create Virtual Server Agent (VSA) VM group schedules separately from the subclient backup schedules, because they are different and operate independently.

The agent-based application backup includes two parts:

  • Virtual Server Agent (VSA) backup: The VSA backup of the virtual machine can be a streaming backup or IntelliSnap backup.

  • Application backup: The application backup is always streaming, even if the VSA subclient is configured for an IntelliSnap backup.

Note

The VSA backup does not trigger an application backup. The application backup is independent of the VSA backup, runs according to the plan schedules, and uses the same plan as the VSA VM group.

Guest OS Support

You can perform agent-based application backup operations for Windows VMs.

You can also perform agent-based application backups for Linux VMs that run Oracle. This option is available only for hypervisors that support Linux proxies.
