Configuring Guest and Application Credentials for VM Level Application-Aware Backups

You can configure application-aware backup settings and credentials at the individual virtual machine (VM) level. This allows you to override VM group–level settings and specify separate credentials for guest access and application authentication.

The following credential types are supported for application-aware backups:

  • Guest credentials

    • Accesses the guest operating system

    • Performs application discovery

    • Installs required packages on the VM

  • Application credentials (optional)

    • Authenticates directly with the application (for example, SQL Server).

Before You Begin

  • The virtual machine is added to a virtualization environment in the Commvault Command Center.

  • Application-aware backups are supported for the selected virtual machine and application.

  • The required credentials are created in the Credential Manager.

  • Guest credentials have sufficient permissions to access the guest operating system.

  • Application credentials (if configured) have sufficient permissions to authenticate to the application.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. Locate the required virtual machine and click the VM name to open the VM Details page.

  3. On the VM Details page, click Application-Aware Backup.

  4. For backup type, select the type of backup to perform.

  5. In the Credentials section:

    • From the Guest Credentials list, select a credential.

    • (Optional) From the Application Credentials list, select a credential.

    Note

If application credentials are not specified, guest credentials are used to run application backups. Ensure that the guest credentials have the required application-level permissions.
