Run space reclamation for deduplicated backup storage

Running space reclamation removes unused data from deduplicated storage to return physical space to disk and cloud object storage (including Air Gap Protect) after data ages or is deleted. Space reclamation helps control storage growth and, for cloud storage, reduce ongoing storage costs.

Typically, you run space reclamation when fragmentation reaches a level where reclaiming space is effective (usually 25–30%), when available storage is running low, or when storage costs are increasing.

Support for automatic space reclamation

For the following storage, when defragmentation reaches 30%, space reclamation runs automatically:

  • Azure Blob Storage

  • Azure Blob Storage in Air Gap Protect

Procedure

For most storage, you must run space reclamation manually. The job runs in the background, and the time it takes depends on the size of the library, the fragmentation level, and the storage performance.

To run space reclamation, follow these steps:

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Storage.

  2. Go to the storage.

  3. In the upper-right area of the page, click Run, and then select Space reclamation.

  4. In the information message, click Submit.
