Use these requirements to deploy access nodes and protect workloads in Nutanix AHV environments. These guidelines reflect the most common and recommended configurations for performance, compatibility, and cyber resilience.
Supported environments
Commvault supports the following Nutanix AHV environments:
-
Nutanix AHV clusters (on-premises)
-
Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2):
-
Microsoft Azure
-
Amazon Web Services
-
Google Cloud Platform
-
Nutanix AHV environments that use Dell PowerFlex as the backend storage
Supported AHV versions
Commvault supports the following Nutanix AHV versions:
4.6, 4.7, 5.0, 5.1.x, 5.5.x, 5.6.x, 5.8.x, 5.9.x, 5.10.x, 5.11, 5.15–5.20.x, 6.0, 6.5–6.8, 6.10, 7.0.x, 7.3.x, and 7.5.
Access node requirements
Minimum resources
Access nodes must meet the following requirements:
-
100 GB disk space
-
4 GB RAM in addition to operating system and application requirements
Supported operating systems
Windows
-
Microsoft Windows Server 2025 (Standard, Datacenter, and Core)
-
Microsoft Windows Server 2022 (Standard, Datacenter, and Core)
-
Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (Standard, Datacenter)
-
Microsoft Windows Server 2016 (Standard, Datacenter)
Linux
-
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x or 9.x
-
Oracle Linux 8.x or 9.x
-
Rocky Linux 8.x or 9.x
-
Ubuntu 22 or 24
Data transfer modes and access node placement
The location of the access node determines the data transfer mode used for backups.
-
Access node inside the AHV cluster uses HotAdd mode and provides better performance
-
Access node outside the AHV cluster uses NAS mode
NAS backup support limitations
NAS mode backups have operating system limitations for access nodes deployed outside the AHV cluster.
Supported:
-
Linux access node (recommended)
-
Windows Server 2022 or earlier
Not supported:
- Windows Server 2025 or later for NAS mode backups
To use Windows Server 2025 or later, deploy the access node inside the AHV cluster and use HotAdd mode.
Best practices
-
Deploy access nodes inside the AHV cluster when possible for optimal performance
-
Use multiple access nodes to distribute workload and improve scalability
-
Use Linux access nodes for NAS mode backups to avoid operating system limitations
Additional requirements
Windows configuration
For Windows access nodes:
-
Disable automount
-
Set the SAN policy to OfflineAll
These settings prevent conflicts with HotAdd disk operations during backup and restore activities.
Technical reference
V3 API permissions
If you are using V3 API, to run backups, your user account must have admin permissions (super user) with all roles defined, or you must configure AD services, and then map the AD user account to the Cluster Admin role and Self Service Portal admin roles via their Self Service Portal.
