Threat Analysis for Virtual Machine Backups

Commvault supports Threat Analysis scans for virtual machine (VM) backups. During the scan process, the backup data is restored to an out-of-place VM, which is then scanned for malware using Commvault's built-in scanning engine.

Support for Scan

  • Encrypted VMs are not supported.

  • Snapshot backups are not supported.

Requirements for the Restored VM

Threat Analysis is supported for out-of-place restores to the following hypervisor platforms:

  • Amazon EC2

  • Microsoft Azure

  • Nutanix AHV

  • VMware

  • VMWare Cloud Director

Supported File Systems for the Restored VM

Note

For optimal performance, use Windows access nodes for Windows VMs and Linux access nodes for Linux VMs. While jobs can run in mixed mode, scanning NTFS volumes may take longer. Additionally, in mixed mode, only NTFS volumes can be scanned when using a Linux access node.

  • Windows: NTFS, FAT32

  • Linux: XFS, Ext2, Ext3, Ext4

Requirements for the Access Node

  • For Amazon EC2, the access node must reside in the same subscription as the restored VM.

  • For Azure, the access node must reside in the same subscription, same region and same zone as the restored VM.

  • For Linux VMs, the access node must run the same or a newer version of the operating system than that of the restored VM being scanned.
