Configuring a Live Browse Cache for Virtual Machines

You can configure a live browse cache for VM operations that use cloud and libraries. A live browse cache can help improve the performance of live browse operations, large restore operations, and VM file indexing.

Considerations

If you enable metadata cache on a VM, data transfers during backups may be greater than you may expect.

  • During full backups, Commvault transfers up to 10% more data than the size of the VM.

  • During incremental backups, Commvault transfers up to 10% of size of the changed blocks.

Before You Begin

  • Install the Virtual Server Agent and MediaAgent on access nodes that are used for backups, browse and restores, and file indexing.

  • For Linux file system support, deploy a Linux access node.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Storage > Cloud.

    The Cloud page appears.

  2. In the Name column, click a disk.

    The disk properties page appears.

  3. On the Backup locations tab, in the Cache section, beside Enable, move the toggle key to the right.

The Configure cache path dialog box appears.

  4. Configure the following options:

    Note

Commvault shares the path you select with all of the MediaAgents in the library using DataServer-IP. For DataServer-IP considerations, see Sharing a Mount Path Using DataServer-IP.

    • MediaAgent: Select a MediaAgent that is used for backup, browse and restore, and file indexing.

    • Type: For Windows MediaAgents, select Local or Network. This option does not appear for Linux MediaAgents.

      • Network: In the Credentials section, select saved credentials or enter new credentials for logging on to the network.
    • Path: Specify the location for the live browse cache.

  5. Click Save.
