Import Restore Process (using non-Amazon proxy)

When account level encryption is enabled, the IAM user/role performing the restore must have access to the account level encryption key.

An Import restore performed using a non-Amazon proxy includes the following stages:

  1. Restore all volumes and configurations on the VSA proxy.

  2. Call the Commvault On Demand service to upload the disks to S3 as pages of a preconfigured size (minimum of 6 MB).

  3. Merge the pages uploaded for each disk to form a single VHD.

  4. Import the OS disk as an AMI and additional disks as snapshots.

  5. Launch the instance from the imported AMI and attach the additional disks from the imported snapshots.

  6. Delete the AMI and snapshots from AWS and the merged VHDs from the S3 bucket.

Note

Storage blocks on EBS volumes that are restored from snapshots must be initialized before the block is accessed. This action can increase the time required to read and write data for the volumes, and significantly increase the time required for backups and restores. Amazon is working to resolve this issue. For more information, see Initializing Amazon EBS Volumes.
