Reference Copy - Frequently Asked Questions

Can I browse, restore or recover a stub from a reference copy?

No. Reference copy does not back up stubs.

Can I change the content of a Reference Copy subclient?

You can change the content of the subclient, but the data will be picked up from the current time, and no previously backed-up data will be included.

Ideally, you should create a new reference copy subclient to back up different content.

Can I convert a Reference Copy subclient to a regular subclient?

No, once a subclient is created, its type (whether regular or reference copy) cannot be changed.

Can I delete a secondary copy associated with Reference Copy subclient?

Yes, you can delete a secondary copy associated with reference copy subclient, but be aware that this results in pruning the reference copy jobs. New jobs may not run on associated reference copy subclients. To ensure that future backups complete successfully, change the association of the existing subclients.

Can I know the objects that will be backed up by my reference copy job?

Yes, you can preview the objects that will be backed up as part of your reference copy job using the Preview tab (on the Reference Copy Contents tab). For any changes to the data in the source subclient, the Preview tab shows the changed view of what will be included in the next backup.

Can I move Reference Copy clients from one CommCell to another?

No, CommCell Migration is not supported for reference copy clients.

Can I Reference Copy data from Exchange Compliance Archiver agent?

No, data from Exchange Compliance Archiver agent cannot be used as the reference copy subclient content.

Can I run Accelerated Synthetic Full Backups on Reference Copy subclients?

Yes, Accelerated synthetic full backups (Dash Full) can be enabled for a reference copy subclient, but the encryption settings of the source subclients (set up as content of reference copy subclient) is honored. The encryption selected for the reference copy subclient is ignored in this case.

Can I use incremental storage policy for Reference Copy jobs?

Incremental Storage Policy is not honored for reference copy jobs.

Can I use Reference Copy with Snap-enabled Subclients?

No. The reference copy operation is not supported with snap-enabled subclients.

Can I use streams with Reference Copy?

Reference copy subclients do not support data streams.

Can I use Web Console to browse and restore data from Reference Copy backups?

Browsing and restoring data from reference copy backups is not supported from the Web Console.

Can this job be restarted?

Yes, you can restart reference copy backup jobs. In the event of a job phase failure, the Job Manager can restart the selected job at the subclient level. If a job is interrupted or suspended for any reason, it resumes from beginning of the last subclient that was being processed, not the last file that was being processed.

Does Reference Copy show multiple versions of files during browse?

If a file was backed up more than once, whether versions of that file appear during a browse of the reference copy client depends on which filters are set on the client. If the File Name filter is used, only the most recent version is shown. If the Modified Date or File Size filters are used, then versions will have been copied, and you will see them.

Does Reference Copy take data from multiple source backups?

Yes, if filter data, such as the date range, for a reference copy operation spans multiple source tapes, all applicable tapes are searched for matching data.

How does Reference Copy handle OnePass enabled clients?

For OnePass-enabled clients, a reference copy job backs up all data versions except stubs.

In what hierarchy is the data backed up using Reference Copy?

For File System clients, the first level is client, then subclient, and finally the specified path.

For Exchange Mailbox, the first level is client, then mailboxes are backed up.

What agent type should be used to list Unix Reference Copy clients in a Schedule Policy?

When a schedule policy is created, reference copy clients with OS type of Unix are listed in the schedule policy association, with an Agent type of Linux File System.

What happens to a reference copy job when services are restarted?

If services are restarted for any reason, you receive a message the job failed; however, the job completes, but with errors. Data from all subclients for which the reference copy operation succeeded do retain the data. Subclients that did not run to completion are picked up in the next reference copy job.

Where are my version 9 clients in the association list?

Reference copy is only supported for clients newer than Version 10. However, you can content index data from previous-version clients, and use the Contains filter in the reference copy subclient association to copy required data from existing backups.

Will I be able to backup data using Reference Copy if my backed up data was aged?

No, reference copy cannot back up aged data.

Why don't I see ACL information using Unix File System clients?

ACLs are not restored for AIX, Free BSD, HP-UX, Linux or Solaris.
