Restoring DB2 Log Files

You can restore archive log filess separately or, if all the log files are backed up, then you can restore the archive log files with the database.

By default, the log files are restored to the DB2 Retrieve Path that you specified when you installed the DB2 Agent.

Restoring log files is useful in the following scenarios:

  • If a database fails, and you need to recover the database to the most recent state, then you can restore all the log files along with the database.

  • If the log files from a specific time range were lost due to a hard disk corruption, you can restore the log files by performing a point-in-time restore of the log files.

  • In certain cases, you might need to restore only specific log files that are missing in the database. You can identify these log files and then restore them by using a serial number or time ranges.

The Commvault software waits 2 minutes for the IntelliSnap operation to complete. If the job does not complete when this time expires, the Commvault software marks the job as failed and brings the database out of the quiesced state. You can set this to a higher value to allow more time for the job to complete. For more information, see Configuring the time the Commvault Software Waits for the IntelliSnap Operation.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > DB2 > instance.

  2. Right-click the backup_set, point to All Tasks, and then click Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore dialog box appears.

  4. Select the databases to restore, and then click Recover All Selected.

The Restore Options dialog box appears.

  5. On the Recover tab, click Advanced.

The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.

  6. On the Log Files tab, select the Restore Log Files check box.

  7. On the Log Files tab, select the restore log option:

    • To restore all log files, select the All Log Files option.

    • To restore log files to a point in time, do the following:

      1. Select By Point in Time.

      2. In Start, enter the start time.

      3. In End, enter the end time.

    • To restore by specifying a serial number, do the following:

      2. Select the Start or End check boxes, and then enter the serial numbers.

        Note

The following are the rules for specifying the serial number:

      3. The last serial number must be greater than or equal to the first serial number.

      4. The first serial number and the last serial number cannot be 0.

      5. The range of serial numbers that you restore can be from one or more backup jobs, or from a part of a job, and from one or more cycles.

      6. When you specify only the first serial number, log files that start from that serial number to the current serial number are restored.

  8. Click OK.

  9. Click OK to close the Restore Options dialog box and to start the restore.
