Restoring Exchange Database Transaction Logs

Applies to: Exchange 2007

If you did not enable VSS before you performed a backup, you can define the restore destination for databases and transaction logs.

Caution

This procedure applies to non-VSS backups only.

There are several methods for restoring transaction logs:

  • To a separate location

  • From the last backup cycle

  • Simultaneously with databases as they are restored (transaction logs are restored only, and not replayed)

Before You Begin

Transaction log files are stored temporarily in the Job Results directory during a restore. Before you restore the transaction log files, make sure that the Job Results directory has enough free space to store all the files. Otherwise, the restore will fail.

Procedure

  1. From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client.

  2. Right-click Exchange Database, and then click All Tasks > Browse and Restore.

The Browse and Restore Options dialog box appears.

  3. Click View Content.

  4. In the left pane of the Client Browse window, expand Exchange Database > Microsoft Information Store > Storage Group or Database.

  5. In the right pane, select the database that you want to restore, and then click Recover Databases.

The Restore Options for All Selected Items dialog box appears.

  6. To restore transaction logs to a separate location, do the following:

    1. From the Destination client list, select the location where you want to restore the transaction logs.

    2. Select Restore to another database.

    3. In the list at the bottom of the dialog box, select the Source DB.

    4. In the Destination DB/Out of Place Location column, click ...

The Choose Database dialog box appears.

    5. Select a database, and then click OK.

  7. Click Advanced.

The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.

  8. On the Exchange Options tab, set up the restore method for the transaction logs.

    1. Select the Restore Destination check box.

    2. Choose a method for restoring the logs.

      • To restore logs to a separate location, select Restore logs to separate location.

      • To restore logs from the last backup, select Restore all logs in cycle.

      • To restore logs and databases simultaneously, select Restore DBs and Logs in separate location.

    3. To restore logs to a separate location, click Browse and then select a destination folder for the logs.

    4. Click OK.

  9. Click OK.
