You can restore one or more instances or images at a time. Instances or images can be restored in place (overwriting the source) or out of place (with a different name, or to a different host).
Considerations
-
You cannot restore the cinder volume description from source volumes. The restored volumes do not have the volume description metadata.
-
If the OS disk was filtered from the backup of an instance, the base image that the instance was based on must be available for the instance to be restored.
-
If an instance or image is added to subclient content or to a filter by browsing and selecting the display name, discovery is performed based on the GUID for the instance or image. If that instance or image is later restored in place from a backup, a new GUID is generated, and that instance or image is no longer identified correctly. To identify that instance or image, you must remove the old rule, then add a new rule or use a name pattern to select the instance or image.
-
If the user specified for the virtualization client does not have permission to create or delete network ports, the restore fails. See VOPS0002: Restore fails with error "Failed to create port with request".
-
When restoring public images for a project, the user performing the restore should have the Admin role for that project. When a user only has the Member role for a project, that user does not have permission to create public images and can only restore an image as a private image. In that situation, an Admin user could later make the restored image public.
Before You Begin
-
To specify the administrator (root) user password for each instance to utilize upon restore, complete the following steps prior to running the restore operation:
-
To your /etc/nova/nova.conf file, add the line:
inject_password=true. For more information, see OpenStack: Injecting the Administrator Password. -
To the CommServe computer, add the bEnableOpenstackAdminPwd additional setting as shown in the following table.
For instructions on adding additional settings from the CommCell Console, see Add or Modify an Additional Setting.

Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > virtualization_client > Virtual Server > OpenStack > backup_set.
-
Initiate the restore from a subclient or backup set:
-
From a subclient: Right-click the subclient and then select Browse and Restore.
-
From a backup set: Right-click the backup set, point to All Tasks, and click Browse and Restore.
-
-
In the Browse and Restore Options dialog box, ensure that Full Instance is selected, and then click View Content.
-
From the list of backed up instances, select one or more instances or images to be restored, and then click Recover All Selected.
The Restore Instance wizard launches and displays the Destination page.
-
Specify the destination and the proxy to be used for the restore.
By default, instances or images are restored in place to the original location, and the restore is performed using the preferred VSA proxy for the virtualization client.
-
In Place: To restore out of place, clear this check box.
-
Virtualization Client: To restore to a different OpenStack keystone node, select the virtualization client from the list.
You can also choose Select different cloud/user for restore, and then enter the URL or user name and provide credentials for the client.
-
Instance Details: This area displays the keystone address for the OpenStack keystone node and the user account specified for the virtualization client.
-
Destination Client: By default, the VSA proxy that performed the backup is used for the restore. If you change this value, the proxy client must reside on the same data center. Only proxies that match the type of the virtualization client are displayed.
-
-
Click Next.
The wizard displays the Instances page.
-
For an out-of-place restore, specify parameters for the restore:
-
Instance and Volume: This column shows information for the source instance. You can expand an instance to view volumes.
-
Change Instance name to: Enter the new display name for the instance.
-
Availability Zone: Click in the row for the instance or image, click ... to browse defined availability zones, and then select a host.
-
Volume type: Select a volume type that is defined for the zone of the source volumes.
-
To change other settings, select a virtual machine and click Configure.
The Openstack Instance Configuration dialog box appears. You can modify the following settings:
-
Instance Display Name: Displays the destination instance name.
-
Availability Zone: Click ... to browse defined availability zones and select a host.
-
Flavor: Use AutoSelect to automatically select a flavor that matches the source VM, or select a flavor that is at or above the original configuration.
-
Security Group: Select a predefined security group that defines the required network access.
-
Key Pair: Select a key pair that identifies the ownership for the converted instance.
-
Admin Password: Enter the administrator (root) user password that should be utilized for this instance upon restore.
-
Confirm Password: Re-enter the administrator (root) user password that should be utilized for this instance upon restore.
-
Openstack Virtual Network Options / Network Interface n: For each of the network interfaces on the source instance, click ... to select a network interface that is available in the destination.
-
Click OK to save and close the Openstack Instance Configuration dialog box.
-
-
-
Click Next.
The wizard displays the Restore Options page.
-
Optional: Select restore options:
-
Power ON Instance after Restore: Select this check box to power on the instance automatically after the restore is complete.
-
Unconditionally overwrite Instance with the same name: Select this check box to overwrite any existing instances with the same names in the target location. If you do not select this check box when restoring an instance to a location that has an instance with the same name, the restore fails.
-
-
Click Next.
The wizard displays the Job Options page.
-
Run the job immediately or configure a schedule for the restore.
-
Click Next.
The wizard displays a Summary page for the restore.
