You can restore an Oracle 11gr2 or 12c tablespace to a point-in-time, using an in-place restore operation. Use a point-in-time restore to revert the tablespace or PDB to a state before an undesired transaction or before a point of failure.
Note
Cross-machine (out-of-place) tablespace restore operations for a point-in-time are not supported.
When you perform a point-in-time restore of a tablespace, the database does not need to be in the down state. Consequently, there is no down time for the production database.
When you restore a tablespace to a point-in-time, the Commvault software automatically creates an auxiliary instance, and then copies the database and tablespaces to that instance. The software stages the database and tablespaces, and then restores the tablespaces to the destination.
The Commvault software uses an Oracle managed auxiliary instance for the tablespace point-in-time restore. Oracle automatically cleans up the auxiliary instance after the restore successfully completes.
Before You Begin
-
Verify that the path to the auxiliary instance location has enough free space. The free space needed for the auxiliary instance location is the sum of the sizes of the system tablespaces and the tablespaces selected for the restore.
-
The auxiliary instance location must be accessible to the oracle user.
-
Verify that the destination path has enough free space for the tablespaces that you want to restore.
Procedure
-
From the CommCell Browser, expand Client Computers > client > Oracle.
-
Right-click the instance, point to All Tasks and then click Browse and Restore.
-
Select Latest Backup and click Time Range.
-
Select the Absolute Time, and then in the End Time area, enter the date and time.
The default Time Zone is the client's time zone.
-
In the right pane of the CommCell Browser window, select the datafiles and tablespaces to restore, and click Recover All Selected.
-
Click Restore in place, and then click Next.
The Oracle In Place Restore Options dialog box appears.
-
Click Advanced.
The Advanced Restore Options dialog box appears.
-
To automatically move the tablespace to the correct online or offline mode before the restore, on the Options tab, select the Switch Database Mode for Restore check box.
-
On the Auxiliary Instance tab, specify the auxiliary instance information:
-
Optional: In the PFile box, type the full path to the PFile that the software uses when it creates the instance.
If you do not specify a pfile, the Commvault software automatically creates a file.
-
In the Staging Path box, type the full path to the location where the software creates the auxiliary instance.
-
-
Click OK.
-
Click OK to close the Oracle In Place Restore Options dialog box and start the restore.
If your restore includes Oracle SYSTEM tablespaces, switch the database mode to MOUNT.
