When you perform a point-in-time recovery of an Oracle database with RESETLOGS, a new incarnation of the database is created. All archive log files generated after resetting the logs will be associated to the new incarnation. However, in order to perform a point-in-time recovery from a backup of a previous incarnation, you need to reset the current incarnation to the previous incarnation value.
