In a multi-CommCell environment, you can use a CommServe computer as the licensing server, where you apply all licensing control mechanisms so that licensing resources can be shared among all CommServe computers in the environment.
Before You Begin
-
Determine which CommServe computer you want to use as the licensing server.
-
Requirement: The CommServe computer must have the Metrics Reporting package installed. If the package is not installed, see Installing the Metrics Reporting Server.
-
On both the License Server and the child CommServe computers, in the settings for the Private Metrics Reporting Server, verify that the Activity option is selected. For instructions, see either of the following topics:
-
The Licensing Server hardware requirements are the same as those for the Private Metrics Reporting Server. To review the hardware requirements, see Hardware Specifications for the Private Metrics Reporting Server.
-
Because the Private Metrics Reporting Server plays the role of a License Server, the child CommServe computers must be able to send data to the Private Metrics Reporting Server over HTTP or HTTPS. To configure HTTPS, see Configuring Secured Access.
-
The License Server cannot be installed with an earlier version of the software than the child CommServe computers.
-
The parent and child CommCells must be on the same feature and maintenance releases. If licensing synchronization issues occur, update both CommCells to the same version to resolve the issue.
Procedure
-
Enable the client group backup quota feature on all the participating CommServe computers, starting with the licensing server.
-
From the CommCell Console ribbon, click Control Panel.
-
In the Control Panel window, under CommCell, click System.
-
In the System dialog box, select the Enable License Limits at Client Group check box.
-
Repeat the steps for each of the participating CommServe computers.
-
-
On all the participating CommServe computers, enable data collection for the Activity report and change the URL for the Metrics Reporting Server to use the URL of the licensing server.
-
On the CommServe computer, on the CommCell Console ribbon, click Control Panel.
-
In the Control Panel dialog box, under Monitoring, click Private Metrics Reporting.
-
On the General tab, select CommCell Diagnostics and Usage, and then select Activity.
-
In the Private Metrics Reporting dialog box, in the Metrics Server URL box, type the licensing server URL.
For example: http://cs_licensing_server .domain.com:80/
where cs_licensing_server is the host name of the computer that you plan to configure as the licensing server. You must include the forward slash (/) at the end of the URL, otherwise the URL link does not work.
-
To upload data immediately, on the General tab, click Upload Now.
-
Repeat the steps for each of the participating CommServe computers, except for the licensing server.
Notes
The first time you activate Metrics Reporting, data is collected within the next hour, and then uploaded to the Private Metrics Reporting Server, depending on your configuration. After Metrics Reporting is activated, data collection runs at the same time every 24 hours. Then the upload is compiled and sent to the Private Metrics Reporting Server, depending on the schedule that is configured in the upload frequency setting. In addition to the daily upload, the following queries upload every hour. Query 72: Daily storage usage and chargeback. Query 137: Data protection job details. Query 208: Admin job details.
-
-
To request licenses for all the participating CommServe computers, on the Commvault Maintenance Advantage Customer Support portal, go to Product Registration & License Management.
In the Registration Request Details box, you must specify which CommServe computer you want to use as the licensing server. In this form, you must also provide the CommCell ID, serial number, registration code, and IP address of each CommServe computer. This information can be found in the CommCell Console, in the License Administration dialog box.
-
Confirm the receipt of the email containing the licenses for your multi-CommCell environment.
The email includes license files for each of the participating CommServe computers. Save the license files on a location that is accessible by the CommServe computers.
-
Apply the license file on each of the participating CommServe computers, starting with the licensing server.
-
From the CommCell Console ribbon, click Licensing and Registration.
-
In the Licensing and Registration dialog box, click the Apply License tab.
-
Click Browse to locate the license file, and when the file is specified in the License File box, click Apply and then click Close.
If communication is lost between the child CommServe computer and the licensing server, after 5 days, a message appears that says the CommServe computer is over capacity. You can then use the reset operation to resume the backup operations. You can reset the capacity usage a total of 8 times.
Note
-
On Command Center, after setting up a licensing server and applying a new licensing key, you must manually perform a Private Metrics Upload on the Licensing Server to immediately implement the update.
-
In a Licensing Server environment, the License page in Command Center includes an additional field that displays the license server update time. This value is the same on the License Server and all child servers.
-
Result
The multi-CommCell environment now relies on the licensing server to monitor the license usage and manage licensing control mechanisms.
