VMW0079: Restoring disks to an existing virtual machine (VMware)

Symptom

When restoring a dynamic disk to an existing virtual machine (target virtual machine), the dynamic disk is restored as a foreign disk.

Resolution

After the restore completes, perform the following steps on the target virtual machine:

  1. Open the Computer Management Console on the virtual machine.

  2. Click Disk Management in the left pane.

    All the disks are displayed in the right pane.

  3. Right click the foreign disk and click Import Foreign Disk...

Drive Letters are not assigned automatically

When you restore a disk to a Windows 2003 virtual machine, the drive letters are not assigned automatically to the partitions on the disk. After the restore completes, assign the drive letters manually.

If you restore a disk to its original location on the Windows 2003 virtual machine, the drive letters are assigned automatically.

Volumes are not mounted automatically

When you restore disks of a Linux virtual machine, the volumes are not mounted automatically. After the restore completes, mount the volumes manually.
