Assess Azure resource protection and cost estimates

Assess discovered Azure resources, estimate backup storage costs, view AI-assisted protection plan recommendations, and manage protection from a single dashboard. Use the dashboard to compare retention and growth assumptions, and to assign protection plans for resources you want to protect with Commvault.

Before you begin

  • Configure at least one connection that can discover resources in your Azure account.

Understand the dashboard layout

Use these tabs to complete common tasks:

  • Overview: Review the total number of discovered resources and storage cost estimates for primary backups.

  • Connections: Add, refresh, and remove connections used for discovery.

  • Resources: Review discovered resources and manage protection plans and backup or restore operations.

Review cost estimates for discovered resources (Commvault SaaS only)

Use the Overview tab to understand how many resources are discovered, how much data is protected, and the estimated monthly storage cost for primary backups.

Review total cost and storage forecast

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Cloud Discovery > Azure.

  2. On the Overview tab, click View cost estimate.

  3. Click Month 1 to view monthly estimates.

  4. Click Year 1 to view annual totals and the storage forecast.

The dashboard shows cost estimates and a breakdown of resources and associated costs. Use filters to narrow estimates by connection, workload type, resource type, region, subscription, or resource group.

Adjust data retention and growth settings

Use the cost estimate view to adjust retention and growth assumptions and compare projected costs.

  1. Click the Edit icon.

  2. Modify retention settings, annual growth rate, and daily change rate per workload.

Manage connections used for discovery

Use the Connections tab to view the connections configured to discover cloud resources.

  • To discover new resources added to your Azure account, click Start discovery.

  • To remove a connection, click the actions menu for the connection, and then click Delete.

Manage protection for discovered resources

Use the Resources tab to review discovered Azure resources and manage protection plans. Resource metadata includes region, protection status, and last backup time.

Get AI-assisted backup plan recommendations

Commvault's Arlie analyzes discovered Azure resources and recommends an appropriate protection plan (backup plan) based on resource properties and existing backup plan configurations. This helps you quickly review and assign backup plans to protect resources.

Note

  • This feature is part of the Commvault Early Adopter program. The Commvault Early Adopter program was created to engage customer feedback on specific features. Commvault works with select customers to discuss, plan, and help deploy the feature release, and to proactively assist with any issues. If you are interested in becoming part of the Commvault Early Adopter program, please contact us at earlyadopter@commvault.com.

  • Arlie recommendations are generated only for resources that are not already protected by Commvault.

  • Each recommendation may apply to a single resource or to multiple resources that share the same configuration.

To view protection recommendations, do the following:

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Cloud Discovery > Azure.
  2. On the Overview tab, in the Resource summary tile, click View Protection Recommendations.

  3. In the Recommendations pane, select the recommended backup plan and then select resources.

  4. Click Assign plan > Assign plan to resources.

The appropriate workload configuration wizard appears. Complete the wizard to configure backup for the selected resources.

Assign a backup plan to resources manually

You can manually assign a backup plan to discovered resources.

Do the following:

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Cloud Discovery > Azure.

  2. Click the Resources tab.

  3. Assign a backup plan using one of the following methods:

    • Select the resources, and then click Assign plan > Assign plan to resources.

    • Specify filter criteria, and then click Assign plan > Create plan from filters.

    Note

The selected or filtered resources must be associated with the same connection, workload type, and subscription, and region.

The appropriate workload configuration wizard appears. Complete the wizard to configure backup for the selected resources.

Run backup and restore for protected resources

You can perform backup and restore operations directly from the Resources tab for discovered resources.

The Actions menu displays options based on the Protection status of the resource:

  • If a protection plan is assigned but no backup has completed, then the Protection status is Protection configured. In this state, only the Backup option is available.

  • If at least one backup has completed successfully, the Protection status is Commvault-protected. In this state, Backup and Restore options are available.

To run an on-demand backup, click Backup. To restore the resource using available recovery points, click Restore.
