Configure auto-scaling for Amazon EC2 access nodes

Use this procedure to enable auto-scaling for Amazon EC2 access nodes so capacity adjusts automatically based on backup and restore demand. Auto-scaling is controlled by a scale configuration client that you associate with a server group, which provisions access nodes as needed.

For information about creating a scaling configuration, see Create a scale configuration for Amazon.

Multi-tenant environments

In multi-tenant environments:

  • Service providers can offer auto-scaling as a service.
  • Tenants can either use their service providers' auto-scaling service or configure their own auto-scaling.

Prerequisites

  • Verify that your AWS Region is supported.

  • Subscribe to the required access node AMIs on AWS Marketplace.

For information about supported AWS Regions and AMIs, see Setup for AWS scale configuration.

Procedure

  1. Create a scale configuration client and associate it to a server group.

  2. Assign the server group to {{ prd_amazon_ec2 }} instances as follows:

    • To enable auto-scaling for new Amazon EC2 instances, select the scaling configuration's server group directly as the access node while configuring the instance.

    • For existing instances, do the following:

      1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

      2. On the Hypervisors tab, select the instance.

      3. In the Access nodes section, click Actions > Edit.

      4. Select the access node group or pseudo scale configuration client.

At least one VSA access node should be selected.

      1. Click Save.

    Important

For Amazon EC2 instances using Commvault hosted infrastructure, you must update the trust relationship of the CommvaultTenantRole to include the ARN of the CommvaultComputeRole created during AWS scale configuration configuration. This allows the auto-scaled compute resources to assume the required role and perform backup and restore operations in your AWS account.
