Configuring Overwrite Media Settings

You can configure the following settings to overwrite media for a tape storage:

Setting

Description

When content verification fails

You can overwrite media in situations where the MediaAgent fails to read a media. For example, incompatible data formats.

When the option is selected, the software overwrites the media when an error appears while reading the On Media Label (OML).

When the option is not selected, the software displays a mount error when an error is encountered while reading the OML.

When media is from different CommCell

You can overwrite the media that comes from a different CommCell environment.

When the option is selected, the software allows the use of media from other CommCell environments by overwriting the OML.

When the option is not selected, the software marks the media from other CommCell environments as bad and displays a message in the Event Viewer indicating that the media is from a different CommCell.

Prevent use of tapes from a different backup vendor

You can allow or prevent the use of media from backup vendors that are not supported in your environment. As each backup vendor has a unique method of writing data on a media, the software can identify media associated with a specific set of backup vendors. Contact your software provider to obtain a list of supported backup vendors.

When selected, the software prevents the usage of media associated with not supported backup vendors.

When not selected, the software allows the usage of media associated with not supported backup vendors.

If you already selected the When Content Verification Failed option above, then this option is disabled, and the software automatically overwrites the media when an error is encountered while reading the On Media Label (OML).

When media is not written to in timeframe

This option is applicable only for stand-alone drives.

When selected, media belonging to the same Storage Policy with the last write time exceeding the specified time, will be overwritten by the subsequent data protection operation. This option is not applicable for Synthetic Full, Auxiliary Copy and Disaster Recovery Backup operations. If you mount a wrong media for any reason like bar code switching, then there is a possibility of overwriting a valid media.

Disable this option at all times to prevent overwriting the data available in the media.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Storage > Tape.
