Deploying a MediaAgent on Google Cloud

Create a MediaAgent on Google Cloud before you configure Google Cloud VM protection if you use your own infrastructure. Use vendor native deployment when possible.

Requirements

  • Verify that you have permission to create virtual machines in the target Google Cloud project.

  • Have the following Google Cloud information available:

  • Project ID

  • Zone

  • VPC network

  • Subnet

  • For vendor native deployment using Terraform, have the CommServe name and CommServe host name available.

  • For manual deployment, have an installation authcode available.

Add MediaAgent

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Manage > Infrastructure.

  2. Click the MediaAgent tile.

  3. In the upper-right area of the page, click Add MediaAgent.

  4. From the Vendor list, select Google Cloud.

  5. Use one of the following deployment methods.

    Vendor native deployment — recommended
    1. From the Deployment type list, select Vendor native deployment.

    2. From the Platform list, select the operating system.

    3. For Instance Name, enter a name for the MediaAgent.

    4. For Project ID, enter the ID of the Google Cloud project where the MediaAgent will be created.

To list the available projects, run the following command in Cloud Shell:

      gcloud projects list

    5. For Zone, enter the zone where the MediaAgent will be created.

To list the available zones, run the following command in Cloud Shell:

      gcloud compute zones list

    6. For Subnet URL, enter the URL of the subnet for the MediaAgent.

To list the subnet URLs, run the following command in Cloud Shell:

gcloud compute networks subnets list --uri

    7. For VPC Network URL, enter the URL of the VPC network for the MediaAgent.

To list the VPC network URLs, run the following command in Cloud Shell:

      gcloud compute networks list --uri

    8. To assign an external IP address to the MediaAgent, enable External IP.

When External IP is enabled, Google Cloud assigns an ephemeral external IP address to the MediaAgent. You can also configure the following options:

      • To use a specific IP address, enable Use reserved static IP address, and then enter the reserved IP address.

      • For Network service tier, select one of the following:

      • Premium: Uses the Google Cloud premium network tier.

      • Standard: Uses the Google Cloud standard network tier.

    9. For CommServe name, enter the name of the CommServe.

    10. For CommServe hostname, enter the host name of the CommServe.

      Note

The CommServe name and CommServe hostname fields are visible only at the tenant level.

    11. If the CommServe is behind a firewall, enable Is CommServe behind a firewall?, and then enter the following network proxy information:

      • Proxy host name: Enter the host name of the proxy server used to connect to the CommServe.

      • Proxy client name: Enter the proxy client name used to connect to the CommServe.

      • Proxy port: Enter the port number used by the proxy to connect to the CommServe.

    12. After you enter the VM configuration information, open Cloud Shell.

    13. Under Deploy the MediaAgent using terraform configuration, copy the VM configuration command and run it in Cloud Shell to deploy and configure the MediaAgent.

    14. After the MediaAgent is deployed, copy the metadata cleanup command and run it in Cloud Shell to remove the metadata used during CommServe registration.

    15. Click Close.

    Kubernetes

Kubernetes deployment is separate from the deployment types available in the Add MediaAgent dialog box.

To deploy a MediaAgent in a Kubernetes environment, see Installing Commvault Packages in Kubernetes Using Helm.

    Auto Provision
    1. From the Deployment type list, select Auto Provision.

    2. In the Name field, enter a unique name for the MediaAgent.

    3. From the Scale profile list, select a scale profile.

A scale profile is a predefined configuration that specifies how MediaAgents are automatically provisioned and managed. It includes settings such as the cloud environment, networking, security, and scaling behavior that Commvault uses when deploying MediaAgents.

      Note

Before you use Auto Provision, create a scale profile. For more information, see Scaling configurations for dynamic management of AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud access nodes.

    4. From the Region list, select the Google Cloud region where you want to deploy the MediaAgent.

    5. From the Platform list, select the operating system.

    6. From the Size list, select the instance size to use when provisioning the MediaAgent.

The selected size determines the CPU cores and memory allocated to the MediaAgent. Review the displayed CPU cores and Memory values to verify the compute resources for the instance.

    7. In the Data disk field, enter the data disk capacity in GB.

    8. From the Server group list, select the server group where the new MediaAgent will be added.

Server groups are logical collections of MediaAgents and other servers that help you organize infrastructure and control where workloads are processed.

    9. Click Submit.

    Manual deployment — least preferred
    • Use manual deployment only when your organization does not permit vendor native deployment.

    • For requirements, see MediaAgent: System Requirements.

    • From the Deployment type list, select Manual deployment.

    Windows

    1. From the Platform list, select Windows.

    2. Click Download package to download the MediaAgent installation package.

    3. Copy the installation Auth code. You will enter this code during installation.

    4. Copy the installation package to the Windows computer where you want to install the MediaAgent.

    5. Run the installation executable as an administrator.

    6. Follow the installation wizard:

      • Select the installation language.

      • Verify that MediaAgent is selected as the component to install.

      • Specify the installation directory, if required.

      • Configure the firewall settings, if prompted.

      • Enter the CommServe host name, if prompted.

      • Enter the installation Auth code.

    7. Complete the installation.

    8. In Command Center, verify that the MediaAgent appears on the MediaAgents page.
