File Server Backups

Back up data that resides on your Windows or UNIX computer.

You can run backups immediately or configure a plan that includes a schedule.

The types of backups are as follows:

  • Full backups: Full backups capture all selected data at the time the job runs and create a baseline recovery point. A successful full backup serves as the foundation for subsequent non‑full backup types (for example, incremental backups require a prior full backup). A full backup first creates an independent snapshot and then copies data from that snapshot to backup media.

  • Incremental backups: Incremental backups capture only data that is new or that has changed since the last successful backup (full, synthetic full, or incremental). Incremental backups generally use less media and place less load on resources than full backups. Incremental backups use the recovery point created by the most recent independent snapshot as the source for the backup, or if unavailable, use a snapshot created at the time the backup starts.

  • Synthetic full backups: Synthetic full backups consolidate the data from the latest full backup or synthetic full backup, together with any subsequent incremental backups, instead of reading and backing up data directly from the client computer. Since synthetic full backups do not back up data from the client computer, these operations impose no load on the client computer. Synthetic full backups do not create independent snapshots.

  • Snapshot: Independent snapshots provide a point‑in‑time copy of the file system that is managed separately from backup copies and does not, by itself, copy data to backup media. Snapshots act as fast recovery points and can be scheduled to run independently of backup jobs. Independent snapshots are enabled by default for newly created subclients. Snapshot-only schedules create snapshots that backup jobs can later use as their source, enabling snapshots and backups to operate as independent but integrated components.
