Getting Started with VAST Data Platform

Getting started with backing up VAST Data Platform file server data includes verifying the system requirements, adding the VAST Data Platform file server, and then performing a test backup and restore.

Procedure

  1. Verify that your access node meets the software and hardware specifications to back up the CIFS shares and NFS exports.

  2. To back up CIFS shares, verify that your environment meets the system requirements for the Windows access nodes.

  3. To back up NFS exports, verify that your environment meets the system requirements for the Linux access nodes.

  4. Add the VAST storage array.

  5. Add the VAST Data Platform file server.

    Important

    • Use VAST cluster‑scoped credentials when adding the VAST DATA Platform file server and configuring IntelliSnap.

    • Assign the Administrator role at the cluster level to the VAST user.

      • Verify that the Administrator role is used for cluster discovery, validation, backup, and restore operations.

      • Do not assign the CSI role for CIFS/NFS backups or restores; CSI is required only for container/Kubernetes workflows.

    • Verify the user has access to the appropriate logical realm on the VAST cluster.

    • Reuse the same permissions for both backup and restore operations.

    • Snapshot deletion may succeed without an explicit delete permission due to VAST‑side behavior.

  6. Optional: Enable IntelliSnap backups for the VAST Data Platform subclient.

  7. Perform a test backup and restore.
