When you manually assign a backup plan to a VM/instance, how the Commvault software handles that change depends on whether the hypervisor has another VM group that's assigned to the same backup plan.

If the hypervisor has another VM group that's assigned to the same backup plan, then Commvault assigns the VM/instance to that VM group.

Otherwise, Commvault creates a new VM group (with a name that includes default) and assigns the VM/instance to that VM group.
For example, if you have the following:

Hypervisor Test

VM Group Staging, which is associated with Backup Plan Monthly
- Virtual Machine East Region

And you assign Backup Plan Bi-Monthly to Virtual Machine East Region, then Commvault creates VM Group Staging default as follows:
