Protect Microsoft Hyper-V Virtual Machines

Commvault provides protection and recovery for Microsoft Hyper-V virtual machine environments. It integrates with the Hyper-V infrastructure to enable agentless backups, application-aware protection, and fast VM or file-level restores. Policy-based automation, deduplication, encryption, and immutability help protect Hyper-V virtual machines from accidental deletion, corruption, ransomware, and other cyberattacks.

Supported resources and data

Commvault supports backups of the following Microsoft Hyper-V resources:

  • Virtual machines (powered on or powered off)

  • VHD, VHDX, and VHDS disk files

  • VHDX formatted hard disks with 4K sector size

  • VM configuration files

  • VM snapshot files

  • Shared disks (streaming backup)

  • Virtual Fibre Channel (vFC) disks

  • Guest files and folders from NTFS and ext3 volumes

  • VMs configured with Hyper-V Replica

Backup and restore capabilities

Backups use Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) and can use Changed Block Tracking (CBT) for efficient incremental backups. Access nodes with the Virtual Server Agent coordinate backup and restore operations without requiring agents on each guest VM.

What isn't supported

Commvault doesn't support the following:

  • Pass-through disks

  • Hard links (disk-level backup only)

  • VM smart paging files

  • Certain VMs where VSS fails to create shadow copies

  • Devices in guest VM over iSCSI or vHBA

  • Page files and swap files without Hyper-V Integration Services on guest

  • VM folders with compression enabled
