Restoring an Amazon EC2 Instance Configuration File

You can restore Amazon EC2 instance configuration files.

Limitations

You cannot restore instance configuration files from a snapshot copy. You must restore instance configuration files from a backup copy.

Procedure

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button, and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Select Instance configuration files.

    The Restore page appears.

  4. To select a specific source copy and/or MediaAgent for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

By default, the software automatically selects the MediaAgent and source copy as follows:

    • MediaAgent: The software uses the MediaAgent that performed the backup.

    • Source copy: By default, the software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.

    Potential for egress charges

Restoring from a copy that is outside the destination Region incurs egress charges. For more information, see Data Transfer on the Amazon EC2 On-Demand Pricing page in the AWS documentation.

For more information, see MediaAgent and Copy Precedence Considerations for Virtualization Restores.

  5. Select the instance that contains the files that you want to restore.

The network configuration files and volumes for the instance are listed. The volumes are restored as VMDK files.

  6. Select the files to restore.

  7. Click Restore.

The Restore options dialog box appears.

  8. From the Access node list, select the access node to restore the files to.

  9. To provide credentials for another user account, under Impersonate user, enter the credentials.

By default, the Local System account on the destination client is used to perform the restore. The user account that you use must have permission to create files in the specified location on the destination.

  10. In Destination path, enter the full path to or browse to the folder to restore the files to.

  11. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

  12. Click Save.
