Restoring Full Out of Place for Azure Stack Hub VMs

You can restore full Azure Stack Hub VMs out place (to a different location).

You can back up VMs that are configured with Azure Stack Hub unmanaged and managed disks. From these backups, you can restore full virtual machines and guest files and folders.

To manage storage and costs, you can select the disk type (standard HDD or premium SSD) for the Azure Stack Hub destination VM (managed disks only).

Limitations

  • When you restore a full VM that is configured with Azure Stack Hub managed disks from an IntelliSnap backup, because of an Azure limitation, you can restore the VM only to the same Azure region where the snapshot was created (that is, the source of the snap copy that was used to restore the VM).

  • Due to a Microsoft limitation, you cannot change the hostname of a restored VM.

Before You Begin

If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

Start the Restore Wizard

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. On the VM groups tab, for the VM that you want to restore, click the action button action_button, and then select Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  3. Click Full virtual machine.

The Full virtual machine page appears.

  4. To select a specific MediaAgent and/or source for the restore, in the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

By default, the Commvault software automatically selects the MediaAgent and source settings as follows:

    • Restore from copy: The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a different copy.

    • MediaAgent: The software selects a MediaAgent based on availability and environment.

  5. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

    The restore wizard appears.

Specify the Restore Destination

  1. For Type, select Out of place.

  2. For Restore as, select the platform to restore the VMs to.

  3. For Destination, select the client to restore the VMs to.

For information about restoring to a different platform, see Cross-Hypervisor Restores.

  4. For Access node, select Automatic, an access node, or an access node group.

If you are restoring multiple VMs, select Automatic to distribute the workload across the access nodes that are assigned for the destination hypervisor. First, the VMs are assigned to the access nodes that are in the same region. If no access nodes are available in the same region, the VMs are assigned to access nodes using the round-robin method. The Automatic option is available for full restore and conversion operations from both streaming backups and IntelliSnap backup copies.

If you select an access node group to restore VMs, the Commvault software distributes the workload across the access nodes that are available in the access node group.

  5. Click Next.

    The Virtual Machines page appears.

Virtual Machines Page

  • Select the VMs to modify restore settings for, and then click Configure restore options.

The Configure restore options dialog box appears.

General Settings

  1. For VM display name, do the following:

    • To modify the name of an individual restored VM, enter the new name.
  2. For Resource group, select the resource group for the restored VM.

  3. For Region, select the region for the restored VM.

    Note

Microsoft does not support restoring keys or secrets to different geographies. If your destination region is not in the same geography, the restore fails.

  4. For Storage account, select the Azure Standard or Premium general-purpose storage account for the restored VM.

You can select a different storage account for each VM and disk.

Only locally-redundant storage (LRS) and StorageV2 (general purpose v2) accounts that are associated with the selected region for the restored VM are listed.

  5. For VM size, select a size for the restored VM.

  6. For Storage Type, select the type of storage for the restored VM.

  7. For Security group, select a network security group for the restored VM or leave the default value of Auto Select.

Network Settings

  1. To modify the network settings, click the action button action_button, and then select Edit.

The Edit network settings dialog box appears.

  2. For Virtual network/subnet, leave Auto Selected selected or select a network and subnet.

  3. For Create/assign public IP, to specify a public IP address, move this toggle key to the right, and then select either Dynamic or Static. If you select Static, enter the IP address.

  4. For Preferred private IP type, select either Custom or Dynamic. If you select Custom, enter the IP address.

  5. Click Submit.

Advanced Options

  1. To modify advanced options, select Advanced options.

  2. To restore the VM as a managed VM, select the Restore as a managed VM check box.

When you select this check box, the restore operation creates VM disks in the specified storage account, converts them to managed disks, and then attaches the disks to the restored VM.

  3. Click Save.

  4. Click Next.

    The Restore Options page appears.

Specify Settings for the Restore Operation

  1. Specify the following settings:

    • Power on VMs after restore: Automatically restart VMs after they are restored.

The power state of the VM does not affect subsequent backups. If the VM is powered on during backups, by default, the VM is powered on again after the restore completes (unless you clear this check box).

    • Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: Delete an existing VM and replace it with the restored VM.

    • Reuse existing VM client: Reuse the existing VM client and map its information, such as client name, host name, and client ID to the source VM.

    • Notify user on job completion: Receive an email notification that the restore is complete.

  2. Click Next.

    The Summary page appears.

Review the Summary and Start the Restore

  1. Review the summary to verify the settings.

  2. Click Submit to start the restore.
