Transport Mode Setting for Backups, Restores, Replications, and Conversions to Amazon EC2

When you perform a restore, replication, or conversion to Amazon EC2, and when you create or modify the settings for an Amazon EC2 VM group, you can modify the Transport mode setting. The default value of Automatic uses the best transport mode for your environment and the data protection operation that you're performing. In some cases, selecting a specific transport mode might provide better results.

Options and Recommendations for the Transport Mode Setting

The following options for the Transport mode setting are available:

  • Automatic (default): This option selects the best transport mode for your environment and the type of data protection operation that you're performing. In most cases, this option selects the Amazon EBS direct option.

  • Amazon EBS direct: This transport mode uses Amazon EBS direct APIs to optimize performance and cost savings.

  • Commvault HotAdd: Use this transport mode when the converted EC2 instance needs production-like performance immediately on first boot.

  • AWS VM Import/Export. This transport mode uses the AWS VM import/export service. Because this transport mode is the slowest, use it only when you can't use one of the other transport modes.

Displaying the Transport Mode Setting

For the Transport mode setting for Amazon EC2 VM groups to be displayed, the first access node that is configured for the VM group must have the Agent Management permission. If no access nodes are configured for the VM group, then the first access node that is configured for the Amazon EC2 hypervisor that the VM group is associated with must have the permission.
