Use the Configuration Helper Tool to Register an App for Power BI

You must register an Azure app for Power BI with Microsoft Entra ID (Azure Active Directory). Instead of manually registering the app in the Azure portal, you can use the configuration helper tool to automate the process.

Requirements

  • A global administrator account is required to use the configuration helper tool.

  • If you have a restricted environment, install the Graph PowerShell module before running the configuration helper tool (in other environments, the tool installs it automatically). See Install the Microsoft Graph PowerShell SDK for instructions.

  • You can download the configuration helper tool from the Command Center:

    • For new configurations: Create Power BI app > Application Details.

    • For existing configurations: Add Azure App > Connection Details.

Register the Azure App Using the Tool

  1. Run the configuration helper tool executable (.exe) file.

The .exe file is available for download in the Command Center.

  2. On the Microsoft sign-in page, enter credentials for a global administrator account.

The tool automatically registers the Azure app and collects the required details, such as the application ID, secret, and tenant ID.

    Note

You can also create a service account using the configuration helper tool, if required.

  3. Enter the required Azure app details in the Command Center to complete the configuration.
