When you configure a replication group for a Google Cloud destination, identify instances, and then provide Google-Cloud-specific values for replication to the destination site.
You can replicate to a Google Cloud destination from Google Cloud source instances.
Before You Begin
-
Confirm that you have Auto recovery administrator permissions in the Command Center.
-
Confirm connectivity between the source and destination sites in Google Cloud.
-
Confirm that both sites have available MediaAgents and access nodes.
-
Confirm that required recovery targets exist for Google Cloud. If a target is not available during configuration, create one using the recovery target workflow.
Start the Configuration Wizard
-
From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Secure > Auto recovery > Replication groups.
The Replication Groups page appears.
-
In the upper-right area of the page, click Add.
The Add replication group page appears.
-
Select Virtual machines.
-
Click Next.
The Add a replication group: Virtual machines page appears.
-
In the Replication group name box, enter a unique name for the replication group.
-
In the Production site hypervisor list, select the Google Cloud source.
-
Click Next.
General Options
-
Select Orchestrated replication to copy virtual machines that are already backed up to the target site, based on the RPO set in the backup plan.
-
Click Next.
- Click Next.
Content Options
Add Google Cloud instances to include in the replication group.
-
In the upper-right area of the page, click Add.
The Add VM dialog box appears.
-
In VM group, select a group that contains backed-up instances.
-
Select one or more instances to add, and then click Save.
-
Click Next.
Storage Options
Select the storage copy and MediaAgent for replication.
-
In the Copy for replication list, select Backup copy. Replication from snapshot copies is not supported.
-
In the Select MediaAgent list, select Automatic or choose a specific MediaAgent.
-
Click Next.
Note
If the client is snapshot-enabled, replication must use the backup copy rather than the snapshot copy.
Recovery options
Configure the recovery target and replication mode.
-
In the Target list, select a previously defined recovery target for Google Cloud. Optionally, you can create a new recovery target if none exists. See Creating a Replication Target for Google Cloud.
-
Access Node: Select a VSA access node (previously called a proxy) or an access node group that can be used to perform the replication operation.
Note
The access node group must contain Google Cloud proxies because you can perform restore/replication operation using GC proxies only.
To restore multiple instances or VMs simultaneously, select Automatic to distribute the workload (instances or VMs) in the auto recovery job across the access nodes that are assigned for the destination hypervisor. This option is available for operations both from streaming backups or IntelliSnap backup copies.
Note
For IntelliSnap backup groups, replication is only supported with non-snap copies.
First, the instances are assigned to the access nodes by a zone match. If access nodes are not available in the same zone, then the instances are assigned to access nodes in the same region. If there is no zone or region match, the access nodes are assigned using the round-robin method.
If you already configured the Access Node setting on the recovery target, you can change that setting in the replication group Access Node option.
If you select an access node group to restore VMs, the Commvault software distributes the workload (instances or VMs) in the restore job across the access nodes (also called proxies) that are available in the access node group.
-
Under Recovery time objective (RTO), select one of the following options:
-
Warm site replication — Defer deployment until failover; reduces ongoing resource usage.
-
Hot site replication — Replicate disks continuously without deploying the instance; minimizes RTO.
If you select Hot site replication, you can enable the Enable replication immediately after group creation option to start replication as soon as the group is created.
Note
If you do not enable immediate replication, the default schedule runs every four hours.

Click Next.
Override options (Optional)
Adjust replication behavior for individual instances.
-
Select one or more instances, and then click Override replication options.
The Override replication options page appears.
-
In the Override replication options dialog box, configure the instance settings:
-
In the VM display name field, choose to leave the name unchanged, add a prefix, or add a suffix.
-
In the Project ID/Zone box, enter the required value.
-
In the Machine type list, select the destination instance type.
-
(Optional): Add Custom metadata or Network tags.
-
(Optional): For a single selected instance, configure Sole tenancy when available.
Note
When multiple instances are selected, some instance settings (such as sole tenancy) may not be available. Select a single instance to access the full set of overrides.
-
Click Save.
-
Click Next.
Advanced options (Optional)
Set failover and overwrite preferences.
-
Enable the Unconditionally overwrite if VM already exists option to replace existing instances at the destination.
-
Enable the Continue to next priority on failure option to continue with the next priority instance if one fails.
-
In the Failover delay between different priority VMs (in mins) box, enter the delay time.
-
Click Next.
