CommServe Server: System Requirements (Linux)

Verify that your Linux environment meets the system requirements for the CommServe server.

Note

If the Linux CommServe server installation fails, see the KB article Troubleshooting Linux CommServe Installation Failures Due to SELinux Policy Issues.

Operating system

Operating system Processor architecture
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.2 through 10.2 x64
Rocky Linux 8.9 through 10.2 x64

Processor

All Linux x64-compatible processors are supported.

Hardware specifications

The hardware requirements for the CommServe server, installed on either physical or virtual machines, is explained in Hardware Specifications for CommServe..

Note

The software installation requires 10 GB of disk space on the operating system drive (/). This space is used for temporary files copied during installation or upgrade.

For hard drive requirements details of other components (such as the Deduplication Mode), see the corresponding system requirements pages.

Disk partitioning

A dedicated 100 GB disk or volume, preferably SSD, is recommended for the following partitions or logical volumes on a Linux CommServe computer:

Note

The following partitions and logical volumes support EXT4 and XFS file systems. XFS is recommended.

  • Linux operating system (/)
  • Commvault application binaries (/opt)
  • Commvault databases
  • Temp database
  • Software cache and Commvault log files

Database engine

The Microsoft SQL Server application installed on the computer must be dedicated to Commvault software and cannot be shared with other applications.

Microsoft SQL Server build Supported editions Default with fresh CommServe installation Certified service pack or cumulative update
Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard Yes Cumulative Update 24, Cumulative Update 23 + GDR

Microsoft SQL Server 2022 is installed during a fresh CommServe server installation.

For information about scalability (such as CPU, socket, and memory limits), performance, and other supported features, see "Editions and supported features of Microsoft SQL Server" on the Microsoft website.

Note

  • On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.x, Microsoft SQL Server requires Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.6 or later.
  • The computer name used during SQL Server installation must be 15 characters or fewer.
  • The minimum supported unixODBC version is 2.3.4.
  • If Microsoft SQL Server for Linux is not installed, Commvault installs it locally during setup.
  • Remote CommServe databases are not supported.

Other required software

Install the following packages before installing the CommServe server.

Linux 10.x

  • boost-regex
  • cyrus-sasl
  • gdb
  • gdb-headless
  • krb5-libs
  • libbabeltrace
  • libcurl
  • libicu
  • libipt
  • make
  • net-tools
  • openssl
  • openssl-libs
  • source-highlight
  • xz-libs

Linux 9.x

  • boost-regex
  • cyrus-sasl
  • gdb
  • gdb-headless
  • krb5-libs
  • libbabeltrace
  • libcurl
  • libicu
  • libipt
  • libtool-ltdl
  • openssl
  • openssl-libs
  • selinux-policy
  • selinux-policy-targeted
  • source-highlight
  • xz-libs
  • zlib

    Note

The version of selinux-policy must be selinux-policy-38.1.53.5 or higher. This is because the MS SQL Server installation for RHEL 9.x will also install the mssql-server-selinux package, which has a dependency that requires the selinux-policy package at version 38.1.53-5 or higher.

Linux 8.x

  • compat-openssl10
  • cpp
  • cyrus-sasl
  • gc
  • gcc
  • gdb
  • gdb-headless
  • glibc-devel
  • glibc-headers
  • guile
  • isl
  • kernel-headers
  • krb5-libs

  • libicu
  • libipt
  • libmpc
  • libtool-ltdl
  • libxcrypt-devel
  • net-tools
  • openssl
  • openssl-libs
  • python3-pip
  • python36
  • xz-libs
  • zlib

Note

For information about SQL Server on Linux, see Microsoft guidelines for SQL Server on Linux on the Microsoft website.

Using the SQL Management Studio, verify the SQL properties listed below.

SQL memory size

Set the maximum server memory to 50% of the physical memory available on the computer.

Server collation

Verify that the server default collation has the following properties:

  • Character set: 1252/ISO (default)

  • Sort order: Dictionary order, case insensitive

  • Unicode collation: General Unicode, case insensitive, width insensitive

  • SQL Server collation: SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS

Temp database properties

Verify the following settings for the tempdb database:

  • At least 100 GB of available disk space

  • Autogrowth enabled

  • File growth set to 10%

For more information about the CommServe Server hardware requirements, see Hardware Specifications for the CommServe Server.

Miscellaneous

Java SE platform

Java is installed automatically during software installation. If a system-installed Java version already exists, Commvault installs a supported Java version in the software installation path.

All Commvault JAR files are signed using SHA-256.

Note

Commvault always updates the Java version with the most recent security updates, so that the components using Java do not have any vulnerabilities that are reported by the open source community. To manually upgrade the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for the Commvault software, see KB article 57019.

Content indexing and compliance search for file systems

Content indexing and compliance search for file systems are supported on Windows web servers and access nodes.
