Customizing the Backup Content for a Server

You can customize the backup content for a file server.

By default, servers inherit backup content settings from the assigned backup plan. Changes made at the server level apply only to that server and do not modify the original backup plan.

Use the following tabs to customize backup content:

  • Under Backup content, specify the content that you want to back up.

  • Under Exclusions, specify content that you do not want to back up.

  • Under Exceptions, specify content that should be included even if it matches an exclusion.

Procedure

Customize the backup content for a server.

  1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Files.

    The Overview page appears.

  2. Go to the Files tab.

  3. In the row for the file server, click the action button action_button, and then click Manage plan.

  4. Click Add.

  5. Select one of the following methods to define the content.

    Method Description Available on
All contents Protect all supported content on the server.
Enter \ for Windows or / for Linux

  6. Configure the content that you want to include, exclude, or except.

  7. Click Save.

Understanding exclusions and exceptions

Use exclusions to omit files and folders from backup operations.

Use exceptions when you want specific content to be included even though it matches an exclusion rule.

Example:

  • Exclude C:\Data

  • Add an exception for C:\Data\Finance

In this example, the Finance folder is backed up even though the parent directory is excluded.

Impersonate user

By default, backup operations use the credentials configured for the server.

Use Impersonate user when the default account does not have access to the content that you want to protect.

Requirements:

  • The credential must have access to all selected content.

  • Insufficient permissions can result in skipped content or failed backup operations.

Global exclusions

Global exclusions exclude common operating system and temporary files from backup operations.

Under Exclusions, you can select one of the following options:

Option Description
Use cell level policy Uses the global exclusion setting configured for the environment.
On Enables global exclusions for the server.
Off Disables global exclusions for the server.

In most environments, retain the default setting unless you have a specific requirement to include content that is normally excluded.
