Customizing Guest VM IP Settings for Hyper-V Restores

When you perform an out-of-place restore of a full virtual machine to a Hyper-V host, you can customize the IP address settings for the restored guest VM. You can assign a static IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS servers, or configure the restored VM to obtain an IP address automatically by using DHCP.

For supported operating systems, requirements, and known behavior, see Guest VM IP customization requirements.

Configure a Linux recovery node

If you're restoring a Linux VM, configure a Linux recovery node on the destination host. The Linux recovery node modifies the network configuration files during the restore process.

  1. From the navigation pane, go to the hypervisor settings for the destination host.

  2. Go to the Configuration tab.

  3. For Node for guest file restore of Linux VM, select the access node that you want to use as the Linux recovery node.

Procedure

  1. Initiate a full virtual machine restore.

  2. In the Restore options dialog box, for Type, select Out of place, and then select the destination host.

  3. Next to the VM that you want to customize, click the Configure restore options icon.

  4. Expand IP address settings.

  5. Choose how to assign the IP address to the restored VM:

  6. To automatically assign an IP address, enable Use DHCP.

  7. To manually assign a static IP address, under Destination VM settings, enter the following information:

    • IP address
    • Subnet mask
    • Default gateway
    • Preferred DNS server
    • Alternate DNS server
  8. Click Save.

  9. Submit the restore job.
