Restoring Guest Files and Folders for Proxmox

You can restore files and folders from a Proxmox VM backup to a guest agent or client that has the File System Core package installed.

When you restore files from a Linux VM, the Linux access node specified for the hypervisor is used to recover files. For Windows guest VMs, ensure that the Virtual Server Agent is installed on the Windows MediaAgent used for browse and restore operations.

Prerequisites

If a passkey is configured for restores, you must have the passkey.

Procedure

1. From the Command Center navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtual machines.

2. Click the VM groups tab.

3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button , and then click Restore.

4. Select Guest files to restore files or folders to the source virtual machine, to another virtual machine, or to a guest agent.

5. To select a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, or to switch to live browse mode, do the following:

   1. In the upper-right area of the page, click Change source.

   2. To switch to live browse mode (browsing from media), move the Enforce browse from media toggle key to the right.

   3. To select a specific source and/or MediaAgent for the restore, do the following:

      • Restore from copy: Select one of the following:

        • Automatic (default): The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy. If the data is not found in the primary copy, the software selects a secondary or auxiliary copy.

        • Primary: The software searches for the requested data in the primary copy.

      • MediaAgent: Select the MediaAgent that performed the backup.

   4. Click OK.

6. Select the objects to restore, and then click Restore.

7. Specify the destination to restore the recovered files to.

   • To restore in place, do not change the value in the Destination client list.

   • To restore to a different location:

     1. Change the value in the Destination client box to use a different access node.

        Note

        Only access nodes that have the file system agent installed are available to select.

     2. To use the Impersonate user option, enter the credentials for a user that has permissions to create files in the destination path on the destination client.

        By default, the local system account on the destination client is used to perform the restore operation.

     3. For Destination path, enter the full path where to restore the files.

8. To restore permissions from the backup and apply them to the files specified for the restore, select the ACLs check box.

9. To restore files and folders with the default permissions for the destination path, select the Data check box.

10. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists.

11. To restore files directly to the destination VM where native hypervisor guest file restore support is unavailable or limited, select Restore via CV tools. For more information, see .

12. Click Submit.
