Restoring Amazon Web Services Guest Files and Folders to a Different Instance


  • You can restore files and folders from an AWS instance backup to a different AWS instance.

  • Commvault indexes guest files and folders of Windows and Linux virtual machines on Amazon Web Services streaming backups and IntelliSnap backups.

  • If you restore Amazon guest files, Commvault automatically creates an S3 bucket for the destination. The bucket name is gx-restore-account_id, where the account_id is the Amazon account for the virtualization client. This bucket is created only once and is reused. Commvault also enables server-side encryption on the s3 buckets we create during an Agentless restore.

  • If you want to use a custom bucket, configure the Additional Setting - AWSbucketForGuestFileRestore.

Before You Begin


  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click the hypervisor.

    The hypervisor page appears.

  3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button , and then click Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Click Guest files and folders.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

    1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

    2. Configure the following options:

      • MediaAgent: Allow the Commvault software to select a MediaAgent or specify a MediaAgent:

        - Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

        - To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

      • Source: Allow the Commvault software to select the copy of backup data or specify the copy:

        - Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

        - To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

    3. Click Save.

  6. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

    The Restore options dialog box appears.

  7. On the Other instance tab, from the Destination hypervisor list, select the host name of the hypervisor.

  8. To use a different VSA access node to perform the restore, from the Access node list, select another access node.

  9. From the list of instances, select the instance to use as the restore destination.

  10. In the Destination path box, enter the destination folder to restore the data to.

  11. To delete an existing file and replace it with the restored file, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

  12. Click Submit.

Agentless Restore Process

When performing an agentless restore, the software goes through the following process:

  1. Restores the Data to access node.

  2. Creates S3 bucket if not already exists.

  3. Uploads the data to S3 bucket.

  4. Downloads the Data into destination VM.

  5. Cleans up the temporary data from S3 and access node.
