Media Recovery - Tape Media

Updated

In the event of a disaster, if the tape libraries are inaccessible, you can recover the data by importing the tapes to a new library in the standby location.

When you configure the new tape library, note the following:

  • Make sure a library with a compatible drive type is used.

  • The library can have internal storage or just be a standalone drive.

  • If the number of drives are less, it may affect some restore jobs. (For example, SQL Agent restores)

To recover the tape media, perform the following tasks in the order listed:

  1. Export the tape media from the existing library.

  2. Identify the tapes that should be imported first to the new library.

If restoring a client is your priority, you can determine the media using List Media operation for a client.

If continued backup is you priority, you can use the Storage Policy report with Include Media option selected.

  3. Import the tapes to the new library in the standby location.

    For instructions, see Import Media.

  4. By default, new tape libraries automatically discover the imported media. If automatic discovery is not enabled, discover the media manually.

    For instructions, see Discover Media.

If using a standalone tape library, restore the data in one of the following ways:

  • Initiate the restore using the new MediaAgent and standalone library.

The restore will prompt to load the tape.

  • Verify the media after loading the tape and start the restore operation.

The restore will automatically use the MediaAgent/Standalone library path.

For instructions on verifying a tape, see Verify the Media.
