Amazon RDS for Oracle

You can use the Commvault software, with the RMAN interface, to back up Amazon RDS for Oracle instances.

Note

You can use Commvault capabilities to protect Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle by using an in-guest Oracle agent. For more information about deploying the Oracle agent on Amazon RDS Custom, see Getting Started with Oracle.

Backups

Data You Can Back Up

  • Oracle user databases (data)

  • Oracle archive logs

Data You Cannot Back Up

You can use a file server agent to back up the following content, which is not included in backups of Oracle databases:

  • Operating system data

  • Oracle application files

  • Oracle server system databases

Backups You Can Perform

  • Full backups

  • Incremental backups

  • Archive log backups

When You Can Perform Backups

  • On a schedule: The server plan that you assign manages scheduled backups

  • On demand: You can perform on-demand backups at any time

Restores

Backups You Can Use for Restores

  • The most recent backup: For example, restore the most recent backup to its original location

  • A backup from a specific date: For example, restore data to a point in time before it became unusable

  • Backups from a date range: For example, restore data that was accidentally deleted

Destinations You Can Restore To

You can restore to the following out-of-place destinations:

  • A different Oracle instance that runs in Amazon EC2

  • An on-premises instance
