Attaching a Disk to an Existing VM for Azure

From Azure virtual machine backups, you can restore a virtual machine (VM) disk and attach it to an existing VM.

Consider the following information:

  • You can use the Attach Disk restore feature with both Azure managed disks and unmanaged disks.

  • You can use the Attach Disk restore feature from streaming backups or IntelliSnap backup copies, but not when restoring directly from IntelliSnap backups.

  • Restoring/attaching an OS disk is not supported.

  • For Azure Classic: When performing a restore from a backup of an Azure VM, you cannot restore a VM disk and attach it to multiple VMs that are part of the same Cloud Service group.

  • You cannot attach a disk to a VM if the VM specified is configured with the managed storage account for boot diagnostics. Instead of using the managed storage account for boot diagnostics, use a custom storage account, and then attach the disk to the VM.

  • For encrypted VM disks, the Attach Disk restore feature is not supported.

Before You Begin

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click the hypervisor.

    The hypervisor page appears. The VM groups area displays summary information for any existing VM groups.

  3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button , and then click Restore.

    The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Select Attach Disk to Existing VM to restore the disk and attach it to an existing virtual machine.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

    1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

    2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

    3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

    4. Click Save.

  6. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

    • The Restore options dialog box appears.
  7. Enter the following information:

    • Destination Hypervisor: To restore to a VM on a different hypervisor, select the hypervisor name from the Destination hypervisor list.

    • Access node: To use a different access node, select the access node or the access node group from the Access node list.

      If you select Automatic, the Commvault software performs the restore operation using the most suitable access node from the destination hypervisor.

      If you select an access node group, the Commvault software performs the restore operation using the most suitable access node that is available in the access node group.

      For access node selection, the Commvault software checks for the same region. If no region match is found, then any of the available access nodes from the selected destination hypervisor or access node group is used.

    • Change disk name to: Type the new name for the disk.

      If you do not enter a new disk name, a unique disk name is created automatically including a time stamp.

    • Destination VM: Click Browse to select the VM to which the disk should be attached.

    • Storage Account: Select the storage account for the restored disk.

  8. Click Submit to run the restore job.
