Editing VM Group Settings for Azure

For an existing VM group, you can modify options that affect backups.

Considerations

• If you want to use a VM in a locked Azure resource, you must select an unlocked resource group for the VM to create and remove snapshots. For more information, see Considerations for Locked Azure Resources.

• For the File System and Application Consistent Backup type, consider the following:

  • This backup type is available only for streaming backups, not IntelliSnap backups.

  • When a Windows VM is running and the VM agent is in a ready state, Azure creates an application-consistent restore point.

  • When a Windows VM is not running, Azure creates a crash-consistent restore point.

  • For Linux VMs, Azure creates a file-system-consistent restore point.

  • The VM agent must be in a ready state for application-consistent restore points.

• After you change the VM backup type between File System and Application Consistent and Crash Consistent, Commvault forces a full backup.

Procedure

1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

   The Virtual machines page appears.

2. On the Hypervisors tab, click the hypervisor.

   The hypervisor page appears. The VM groups area displays summary information for any existing VM groups.

3. Click a VM group.

   The VM group page appears.

4. Click the Configuration tab.

   The Settings area shows settings that are used to back up the virtual machines in the VM group.

5. In the Settings area, do the following:

   • To use changed block tracking (CBT) for backups, move the Use changed block tracking toggle key to the right.

     With CBT, backups write only blocks that changed after the previous backup. You can use CBT with unmanaged and managed disks. For virtual machines that have a known issue with CBT, you can turn off CBT to run backups using the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) method instead.

   • To perform IntelliSnap backups, move the IntelliSnap toggle key to the right.

   • To discover VM owners during backups, move the Auto detect VM owner toggle key to the right.

   • To enable file indexing, move the File Indexing toggle key to the right.

     Note

     • When you enable file indexing, if the MediaAgent that is associated with the backup plan or the storage policy that is assigned to the VM group does not have the software packages that are required for file indexing, Commvault automatically installs those packages.

     • When you enable file indexing, if the access node (also called proxy) that is assigned to back up the VM group does not have the software packages that are required for file indexing, Commvault automatically installs those packages.

   • To change the resource group that a snapshot is created in, do the following:

     1. In the Custom resource group for disk snapshots area, click Edit.

     2. Select a resource group.

     3. Click Save.

6. To edit other settings, in the Settings area, click Edit.

   The Edit settings dialog box appears.

   Provide the following information:

   • No. of readers: Set the number of readers to control how many parallel read operations can be launched during backups.

   • For Virtual machine backup type, select one of the following options:

     By default, when a VM group is created, the backup type is crash consistent.

     • Application aware: Uses in-guest application plug-ins to assist in quiescing the file system and applications and in supporting granular application data recovery.

     • File system and application consistent: Uses VM restore points to perform a point-in-time application-consistent snapshot of all the managed disks of the VM.

     • Crash consistent: Uses an Azure software snapshot for a basic backup of the VM.

   • To specify credentials for guest VMs in the VM group, click the key button (), and then provide the guest credentials.

7. To modify the plan or policy associated with the VM group, click Edit in the Plan area or the Policies area.

   The name of the area depends on whether the VM group was defined to use a backup plan that was created in the Command Center or a storage policy that was created in the CommCell Console. You cannot change that selection for an existing VM group, but you can select a different plan or policy, as follows:

   • When editing the Plan setting, you can select a plan that was previously defined in the Command Center.

   • When editing the Policies setting, you can make the following changes:

     • From the Storage policy list, you can select a storage policy that was previously defined in the CommCell Console or a plan that was defined in the Command Center.

     • Optional: You can select a schedule policy that was previously defined in the CommCell Console.

8. Click Save.
