Fully Automated Restores for MongoDB

Restores for MongoDB clusters are fully automated, requiring no manual intervention.

As part of the automated procedure, before the restore operation, the MongoDB servers are shut down and the data paths are cleaned up. Data is restored to all the MongoDB servers in the destination cluster instead of using the resource-intensive initial sync MongoDB operation.

After the restore operation, all the secondary members are added to the replica sets automatically.

Making Access Nodes an Optional Configuration for Network Share Backups

When you create a network share client, you can add CIFS, NFS, or both. For CIFS and NFS, selecting access nodes is optional. If you do not select access nodes for the subclient or the agent, then the software uses the MediaAgents specified in the plan as access nodes.

Virtual Server Agent (VSA) for Hyper-V supports VM-centric backup and restore operations using Indexing Version 2.
For a new Commvault deployment with Feature Release 25 or a more recent feature release, Indexing Version 2 is enabled by default, and a new Hyper-V hypervisor automatically uses Indexing Version 2. For an existing Commvault deployment that does not include any Hyper-V hypervisors, a new Hyper-V hypervisor automatically uses Indexing Version 2. For an existing deployment that has existing Hyper-V hypervisors, a new Hyper-V hypervisor uses Indexing Version 1 only.

Extent-based backups are automatically applied for files that are 1 GB or larger.

Skipping Page Files or Swap Partitions During Backups

For Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), when backing up a virtual disk for a virtual machine or an instance, you can choose to skip the backup of the Windows page file or Linux swap partition. Use this option to reduce the size of backups for the virtual disk on storage media.

This feature supports only streaming backups and backup copy operations. It is enabled by default.

Use Region-Based Storage Policy for SAP HANA System Replication

In an SAP HANA system replication setup, if the primary and secondary nodes are in different locations, you can configure the backups to automatically select the storage policy with libraries based on the region of the current primary node. Using a region-based storage policy avoids data transfer over a WAN and enables faster backups.

Using a Security Key for Two-Factor Authentication

Users can use a FIDO2-compliant hardware security key (such as Yubikey from Yubico) as a multifactor authentication method for logging on to local networks and to Active Directory without entering a password (for a "password-less" strategy). After you enable two-factor authentication in Commvault, users can use the PIN-generating tool or they can set up their hardware security key as the primary multifactor authentication method.

When users log on to their CommCell account, the Commvault software prompts the users to insert and touch the hardware security key, and then completes the authentication. If SAML is configured through the authentication provider, you can also use Yubikey for SAML-based logons.

Virtual Server Agent (VSA) for Azure Stack Hub supports VM-centric backup and restore operations using Indexing Version 2.

Snapshot-based backups of Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services (EBS) block storage volumes are cloud optimized to reduce database quiesce time to fewer than 10 seconds. When you browse and restore data from an archive cloud storage repository, the Cloud Storage workflow recalls the index automatically.
Combined storage tier cloud libraries receive indexes faster from a warm tier. Direct to Cloud Archive Storage recalls incur the archival recall delay, based on the cloud storage service being used.

The automated index recall applies to all Commvault hypervisor, file system, and application agents (using V1 or V2 indexing). The recall functions for both deduplicated and non-deduplicated cloud libraries.

Repositories Backed Up Using DevOps Apps Are Counted Under the OI License, the VOI License, or the Capacity Calculation

If the virtual operating instance (VOI) license is applied in a CommServe environment (count logic: 1 VOI per repository), then repositories that are backed up using DevOps apps (Github and Azure DevOps) are counted towards the VOI license. If the CommServe environment is an operating-instance-only environment, then the repositories are counted under the operating instance (OI) license using the borrow logic. If OI or VOI licenses are not present, then the repositories are counted under the capacity calculation.

Use AWS Graviton2 Instances for Amazon Access Nodes

Commvault access nodes can use AWS Graviton2 (64-bit ARM) images that run Amazon Linux 2 via AWS Marketplace.
When you configure an Amazon access node, a 64-bit ARM Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is used with Commvault preinstalled. If you use automatic scaling for access nodes, an ARM instance will automatically be selected. If an ARM AMI is not available in the region, then a 64-bit x86 image will be selected.
AWS Graviton2 64-bit Arm Neoverse cores can provide better price performance over comparable current generation x86-based instances. For more information, see AWS Graviton Processor.

Use Multiple Access Nodes for Restores of Virtualization Instances or Virtual Machines

When you restore multiple instances, you can use the Automatic option to distribute the instances or VMs in the restore job across the access nodes (VSA proxies) that are configured for the hypervisor. Instances or VMs are assigned to the access nodes first by performing a zone or a host match. If the access nodes are not available in the same zone or host, then a region or a datacenter match is performed.
Distributing the workload across all of the available access nodes improves the speed and efficiency of the restores.
This option is available for full instance restores from streaming backups and IntelliSnap backup copies, and for replication.
