Restoring Full Instances for Google Cloud Platform

You can restore one or more instances at a time. You can restore instances out of place with a different instance name, or to a different Google Cloud Platform (GCP) service account.

You can restore full GCP instances from a streaming, IntelliSnap, or backup copy.

Before You Begin

Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Protect > Virtualization.

    The Virtual machines page appears.

  2. On the Hypervisors tab, click the hypervisor.

    The hypervisor page appears.

  3. On the VM groups tab, in the row for the VM group, click the action button action_button , and then click Restore.

The Select restore type page appears.

  4. Select Full instance.

    The Restore page appears.

  5. To choose a different MediaAgent or source copy for the restore, do the following:

    1. In the upper-right corner of the page, click Settings.

      The Settings dialog box appears.

    2. For MediaAgent, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the MediaAgent or to specify a MediaAgent:

      • Automatic: By default, the Commvault software selects the MediaAgent for the restore operation based on availability and environment.

      • To restore data using a specific MediaAgent, from the list, select a MediaAgent.

    3. For Source, decide whether to have the Commvault software automatically select the copy of backup data or to specify the copy:

      • Automatic: By default, the restore operation searches for the requested data in the primary copy and selects a different copy if the data is not found in the primary copy.

      • To restore from a specific copy of backup data, from the list, select a backup copy.

    4. Click Save.

  6. Select the content to restore, and then click Restore.

The Restore options dialog box appears.

  7. For Type, select Out of place.

  8. Under Destination, select a hypervisor to restore to a different GCP deployment.

If you want to restore a GCP instance that was turned off during a backup operation, you must assign that instance an external IP address using the GCP portal.

  9. From the Access node list, select the access node or the access node group for the restore, or select Automatic.

    Note

The access node group must contain Google Cloud Platform (GCP) proxies because you can perform restore/replication operation using GCP proxies only.

When you restore multiple instances or VMs, select Automatic to distribute the workload (instances or VMs) in the restore job across the access nodes (also called proxies) that are assigned for the destination hypervisor.

First, the instances or VMs are assigned to the access nodes by a zone match. Then, if access nodes are not available in the same zone, the instances or VMs are assigned by a region match. If access nodes are not available in the same region, then the instances or VMs are assigned using the round-robin method.

The Automatic option to distribute the workload is available for full restore and conversion operations, both from streaming backups and IntelliSnap backup copies.

If you select an access node group to restore VMs, the Commvault software distributes the workload (instances or VMs) in the restore job across the access nodes (also called proxies) that are available in the access node group.

  10. Enter the following information:

    • Instance display name: (When restoring a single instance.) Enter a new instance name to be used for the restored instance.

    • All VMs: (When restoring multiple instances.) Select a specific instance from the list so that you can enter a new instance name to be used for the restored instance.

    • Zone (also called Primary Zone): Click Browse to select the destination zone for the restored instance.

    • Secondary Zone: Select a secondary zone for the restored instance.

This option is applicable only if the source instance has a regional disk configured.

    • Machine type: Select the machine type for the out-of-place restore.

    • Network settings:

      • External IP: Select one of the following options:

        - Ephemeral: GCP automatically assigns the IP address.

        - Reserved static IP: Select from a user-defined set of available, reserved IP addresses.

      • Internal IP: Select one of the following options:

        - Ephemeral (Automatic): GCP automatically assigns the IP address.

        - Ephemeral (Custom): Enter a custom IP address.

        - Reserved static IP: Select from a user-defined set of available, reserved IP addresses.

      • Virtual network/subnet: Select the network settings.

  11. Sole-tenant nodes: Click Browse to select the nodes or node groups you want to be associated with the restored instance.

    Note

The Node affinity dialog box lists all available node groups. However, you can only select the node groups that are supported for the specified machine type.

  12. Custom metadata: Type the custom or predefined key-value pairs associated with the scripts you want to run when the instance restores.

The replicated VM will have the key-value pairs in the Custom metadata section on the VM instance details page on the destination VM.

  13. To start restored VMs automatically, move the Power on VMs after restore toggle key to the right.

  14. To delete an existing instance and replace it with the restored instance, move the Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists toggle key to the right.

    Note

If an existing instance with the same name exists on the destination host and you do not select Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists, the restore job fails.

  15. Click Submit.

For information about sole-tenant nodes, go to the Google Cloud documentation website, and search for "sole-tenant nodes".
