Retiring Offline Laptops in the CommCell Environment

When a laptop is repurposed, stolen, lost, or discarded, it cannot connect to the Commvault software for scheduled backups and is considered offline.

Once the laptop is offline for the number of days you select, the Commvault software automatically takes over and initiates retirement. The automatic retirement process involves the following steps:

1. Uninstalling the laptop package

2. Releasing the license

This automated process saves you from manual intervention, ensuring efficient management of your offline laptops.

You can restore the data from the laptop after it has been retired for a selected period of time. After that, the Commvault software deletes the laptop and its data.

Note

  • If the time period for retiring and deleting offline laptops is configured in a laptop plan, then the laptop plan configuration takes precedence over the company configuration. Procedure

  1. From the navigation pane, go to Manage > System.

    The System page appears.

  2. Click the Laptop options tile.

    The Laptop options page appears.

  3. On the Laptop configuration tab, in the Retire offline laptops section, click Edit edit button outline grey/gray pencil.

  4. Update the retire and delete settings:

    1. In the Discontinue backups when laptops are offline for box, specify the period after which the offline laptop is retired automatically.

    2. In the Data cannot be restored after box, enter the time period for retaining the retired laptop and its data for restoring purposes. After the time elapses, the Commvault software purges the retired laptop data from the system.

Results

  • After the time period for retiring offline laptops completes:

    • The offline laptops that do not have associated backup data are deleted.

    • The offline laptops that do have associated backup data remain in the deconfigured state.

  • After the time period for deleting offline laptops completes, the deconfigured laptops are deleted. Subsequently, the laptop and its data cannot be restored.
