VM Group Replication Options for Google Cloud Platform

When you configure a replication group for a Google Cloud Platform destination, identify source instances, and then provide Google-Cloud-Platform-specific values for replication to the destination site.

You can replicate to a Google Cloud Platform destination from Google Cloud Platform source instances.

  • Note: While replicating instances to a GCP destination using the Deploy virtual machine only during failover option, the software uses a JSON config file to create the instance. The software saves the JSON config file in a storage bucket during the replication operation, and then after the instance is created, deletes the JSON config file. Configure the relevant permissions for the GCP Service Account in the destination project to create a storage bucket, otherwise replication will fail. For more information, see Service Account Permissions for Google Cloud Platform.

Content Options

  • Hypervisors: Select the hypervisor for the source VMs. When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

  • Name: Enter a descriptive name for the replication group.

  • Select VM group: Select an existing VM group, or select Create new VM group to add specific VMs and create a new VM group. When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

  • Select VMs: Select specific virtual machines to be replicated and click OK. You can select VMs from the specified VM group.

Target Options

  • Recovery target: Select a previously defined recovery target. To create a new recovery target, click Create new. When you edit an existing replication group, you cannot change this value.

  • Access Node: Select a VSA access node (previously called a proxy) that can be used to perform the replication operation.

To restore multiple instances or VMs simultaneously, select Automatic to distribute the workload (instances or VMs) in the replication job across the access nodes that are assigned for the destination hypervisor. This option is available for operations both from streaming backups or IntelliSnap backup copies.

First, the instances are assigned to the access nodes by a zone match. If access nodes are not available in the same zone, then the instances are assigned to access nodes in the same region. If there is no zone or region match, the access nodes are assigned using the round-robin method.

If you already configured the Access Node setting on the recovery target, you can change that setting in the replication group Access Node option.

Advanced Options

  • Unconditionally overwrite if it already exists: When you select this option, the first replication operation replaces an existing instance with the same name in the target location, even if the destination instance is running.

Replication operations from incremental backups are not affected by this setting. Subsequent incremental backups and replication updates are applied to the destination instance without overwriting the instance. If the destination instance is currently running, the replication operation fails.

  • Deploy virtual machine only during failover: Select this option to deploy a project only after a failover operation is started.

By default, when this option is not selected, a destination instance is deployed immediately after a replication operation completes.

  • Select copy: Select the backup copy that should be used as source for the replication operation.

Override Options

  • Override replication options of virtual machines: To change the destination settings for a specific instance, move the toggle key to the right, under Replication configuration, select an instance, and then click Override replication options.

You can enter override settings for one instance at a time.

The Edit virtual machine dialog box appears.

    Enter the following information:

    • Instance display name: Enter the display name for the destination instance.

You can only change this value when adding a new instance.

    • Primary zone: Select the zone in which the replicated disk is created.

You can only change this value when adding a new instance.

    • Secondary zone: Select the secondary zone in which the replicated disk is created.

You can only change this value when adding a new instance.

    • Machine type: Select a Google Cloud Platform machine type.

    • Network interface: Select one of the available network interfaces for the instance.

      Note

Static IP addresses from a source instance are not replicated to the destination instance.

    • External IP: To assign a public IP address to Google Cloud Platform instances during replication, select this check box.
