Access Commvault Storage Using NFS or SMB Protocols

Hybrid File Store provides NFS and SMB interfaces to the Commvault Content Store so that users can protect and recover their data by using native file system client software.

Hybrid File Store does not require any dedicated Commvault data agent package on clients because, after the share is mounted, it becomes part of the file system namespace and is accessible to applications through the native file system interface. Applications can seamlessly access their data directly from the backup media.

Hybrid File Store can support powerful use cases, such as running SQL queries on database backups without actually recovering the entire database.

Key Features

  • Provides NFS and SMB interfaces for the Commvault Content Store.

  • No need to install the Commvault data agent packages on the clients.

  • Supports multiple versions of files.

Solution Overview

The following components comprise a Hybrid File Store system:

  • A CommServe server.

  • A Linux MediaAgent for the NFS protocol or a Windows MediaAgent for the SMB protocol with the Hybrid File Store software. The MediaAgent is the main file server that clients connect to in order to access the store. A dedicated local disk is required for caching the metadata and data.

  • A backup MediaAgent. You can install the MediaAgent on the same server as the Hybrid File Store, or on a different server.

  • A Linux or Windows MediaAgent computer that acts as an Index Server. To configure the Index Server Cloud, install the Web Server or Index Gateway, the High Availability Computing package, and the Index Store package. You can also use the MediaAgent with the Hybrid File Store software installed as the Index Server.

    Note

You can configure the index server and Hybrid File Store server on the same computer. The MediaAgent component can either be on the same server or on a different server. The sizing considerations will remain the same for the index server and HFS server irrespective of whether they co-reside or are on different servers.

  • NFS clients. NFS clients are any machines that can mount an NFSv3 or NFSv4 share.

    Note

A minimal server install requires one Windows computer for the CommServe server, one Linux or Windows computer for the Hybrid File Store software, and an Index Store Server.

The table describes the requirements for each component.

Component

Requirements

CommServe server

Windows or Linux

Index Store Server (packaged with the Web Server or Index Gateway)

Windows or Linux

The Web Server is not supported on Linux platforms, so the Index Gateway package must be installed along with the Index Store package.

Hybrid File Store (packaged with the MediaAgent)

Linux or Windows

For information about disk size guidelines, see Hybrid File Store Disk Cache Size Guidelines.

Client computer

Any operating system that has NFS or SMB support

Configuration Interfaces

You can add and manage Hybrid File Store shares through the CommCell Console, Command Center, or using the ConfigureObjectStore command.
